    Just for the sake of clarity, at least in most U.S. states, this would qualify as standard house arrest, just made nicer by having a fabulous house. I won't elaborate, but a member of my family was recently on house arrest. He basically could do whatever - as long as he stayed in the house or in its immediate vicinity in the yard. People could visit, the rest of the family members still lived there and went about their daily lives, etc. He was also allowed to leave the house for medical appointments as long as he notified officials. So, not sure how this usually works in Switzerland, but this sounds like standard house arrest in the U.S. Of course, house arrest is much nicer if the house happens to be a huge chalet and you have the budget for some awesome parties.

    I would also point out that my family member didn't do anything nearly as bad as raping a child and fleeing justice for 30 years, so I still think this is being pretty soft on Polanski.

    His complete lack of remorse is really what gets to me. I've heard stories of other people who have been fugitives from justice for 20 years, and have started over with new identities, and I often feel sympathetic and think they should be cut some slack. But he has been living it up in France this whole time and hasn't even had to hide where he is.

    Unlimited, unmonitored phone and internet and unlimited, unmonitored visitation and activities. And a view. I'm more in jail at work providing healthcare and saving lives than this guy is for raping a child.

    @boobookitt: Did you forget? HE IS AN ARTISTE. OK, yeah, he made some really great films. Doesn't excuse him in my book. He can be both a visionary director AND a rapist. They are not mutually exclusive. And, I'm not sure what you do, but thanks! Sounds like you're giving back in a tangible way.

    Just about any other circumstance and this man would be destroyed by the public: if he were poor, black, or gay he'd be dead already. But because he was rich, white, and raped a girl, his prison is my vacation.

    The article I read also claimed that his calls/internet would not be monitored by the authorities. Because that's really smart to do with someone who's been a fugitive for 30 years and is indignant that he finally got caught.

    Did the ski sequence from the Fearless Vampire Killers pop into anyone else's mind when they saw Polanski and ski action adventure paired together?

    In their next article the Times of London needs to expand their ski escape scenario to include Polanski fleeing in a red velvet jacket with a floppy bow around his neck while pursued by undead Swiss officers.
