Kim Deal is Mr. lisas' not-so-secret celebrity crush. I feel obligated, therefore, to click on this article but not actually read it. Take that you hussy.
I met them last year after a show at a dingy tiny bar in Buffalo. I got Kim's autograph but had no paper or pen so it's in eyeliner on a five dollar bill.
@whoneedslight: @otherginger: I'd challenge the theory too, but maybe she truly thinks Exile on Main Street doesn't hold a candle to Undercover of the Night? I mean, I hope not, but ...
God, you couldn't pay me to go back to the 90's hardcore scene. It was quite possibly the most openly hostile scene to be in as a female. So much macho posturing, so much being inadvertently knocked out by some windmilling idiot. Funny enough, though, I've watched the guys in the big pants and football necks with the "XXX" tattoos morph into the skinny, cokehead hipsters with the feminine short-shorts and ironic sunglasses.
@Santos L Halper - Ovaries: Babe, I can guarantee that the 00's hardcore scene wasn't much better. There is still the idiotic windmilling, the metaphorical jacking off to "beatdown" bands, the weird sense of machismo.
On the bright side, I know of like...2 female fronted bands, so that has to count for something...
Okay, I'm being thick, I guess: how is the Chili Peppers with socks on their dicks an example of "male exploitation"? They didn't do that to be sexy and make women lube in their shorts (the way that, as tradition has it, women disrobe or dress scantily to move product via titillating male consumers); the Peppers did that to be funny and to parody the famous Beatles album cover Abbey Road. Am I right? (Er, am I?!)
@bloodflower: I think she has a certain point though. I'm not sure how it fits into the example of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but there is an assumption that when men use their sexuality, they are in control of it, and when women do, they are being exploited. It's not that these aren't necessarily often true in the context our culture, but always assuming it can be harmful to both women and men.
Kim - music is still by and large a boy's club. Let me tell you about it over some Sprite or something. It makes me livid and I wouldn't want to threadjack, so this is as far as I'm going to go.
This morning I decided that I'm going to make a sort of riot grrl tribute zine for an art project. I want to focus on some of the many badass pioneering women in rock and roll.
Who are your favorite lady rockers, jezzies? So far I've decided I'm going to do Stevie Nicks (of course), Joan Jett, and Kathleen Hanna.
@DontFearTheReefer: check out Wanda Jackson [www.wandajackson.com] she was a pioneering rockabilly singer, toured with elvis back in the day. her voice was crazy.
@DontFearTheReefer: Carole King, Joanie Mitchell, Carly Simon. There's actually a book about the three of them called "Girls Like Us". You should check it out.
@DontFearTheReefer: sleater-kinney? i also second jenny lewis. oh! and pauline black of the selector! i love her....oh and the slits. can't forget the slits.
@hortense: yeah, his botoxed face gets far more vitriol than the weight he's put on. hell, his weight gain makes him more relatable to his fan base, but the botox? not so much.
@bluebears: I think they're going to be touring again! Don't miss it! They played like 30+ songs and were so tight, like they'd never stopped playing together.
@bluebears: Oh, I am totally heart'ing you. SY's new album is so ridiculously good. And now I'm jealous because they're not coming to Southern California! Grr.
@The Queen of No: well comfort yourself with the fact that you live in Southern California and I'm in MI (sad trombone). BF and I watched the most amazing netflix a few months ago that was just a compilation of all their old music videos. so fucking surreal and crazy. they were so awesome.

I would further submit Axl Rose's recent weight gain and the resultant howls of dismay from (mostly male) critics.
