<![CDATA[Puppet Regime]]> It's safe to say this is a new interpretation of the Rosenbergs, the couple executed in 1953 for alleged espionage, namely, a puppet show created by the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theater in NYC. Says creator Vit Horejs, “When I was writing it, I was convinced we would be using marionettes for all these protagonists moved by the machinery of the justice system or injustice system. That would obviously be an easy metaphor.” In addition to the Rosenberg puppets (who meet their end in miniature electric chairs, left) the cast includes live actors and two teddy bears, representing the couple's sons. <![CDATA[Female playwrights frustrated by the small...]]> Female playwrights frustrated by the small number of plays in production and written by women for the 2008-9 season are holding a meeting tonight to air their grievances with representatives of leading theaters. Playwrights Sarah Schulman and Julia Jordan say that plays by men are being produced in Off Broadway theaters at 4 times the rate of plays by women. The problem is even worse on Broadway, where not a single play currently running was written by a woman. “I personally don’t think playwriting is a gene on a Y chromosome,” says playwright Theresa Rebeck. "Many of our male peers find the debate intolerable. Men in the community seem to think that everything is fine.” [NY Times]

<![CDATA[What Light Through Yonder Window Breaks?]]> There's a staging of Romeo and Juliet at Washington D.C.'s Capitol Hill Arts Workshop that's different from any other version you may have seen: The entire cast is female. "An hour shorter, a fraction of the cost and 100 percent more women," is the production's slogan. It's meant to be a throwdown, a challenge to the grander, costlier all-male Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare Theatre Company's Sidney Harman Hall. And estrogen isn't the only thing different about the play run by Taffety Punk, the theater company doing the "smarter, cheaper, better" play: The famous balcony scene is done on monkey bars. <![CDATA[ Morten Traavik, the Norwegian theater director...]]> Morten Traavik, the Norwegian theater director who created a beauty pageant for female landmine victims called "Miss Landmine," is coming under criticism for exploiting the women and creating a "freak show". Traavik responds that he is helping the victims and is "fed up" with pictures of Africans and Cambodians in rags, but to be honest, his claims might be more convincing if he did more than "raise awareness" and give the winners gold prosthetic limbs.
