people like her father scare me - especially since i've encountered so many of them in my life - pathalogical liars who invent the weirdest tales - and because they seem so 'normal', initially i believe them, until one small thread comes loose, and the whole thing unravels.
in the past 10 years, i've had 5 such people as friends.... over this past weekend, i discovered that two friends were pathalogical liars - NOTHING i know about them is true... they frighten me. i cannot imagine having her dad as a parent, what stress. and his total lack of accountability! outrageous!!!

This was an incredibly difficult read for me because I have a similar story. Most, recently, Dad and his banker buddy tricked me into getting a loan for 100,000 in my name. The banker (a VP, no less) gave the money to a business account with my name on it, my dad spent it, and then they both asked me in to sign the papers to make it official after the money was spent. It's a longer story than that, but that's basically what happened.
I had no idea I was going into this VP's office to sign loan papers.
The thing that bothers me the most: I have accepted his behavior and often take on these issues to spare my younger brother's and sister's, who he also tries to take advantage of. I can not bring myself to sue him. I actually had a real break down one night, holding a lawyer's card, and finally realizing that for all my threats, I can't actually sue him. I just can't. I consider myself extremely strong, but in that, I've found my weakness.

@desertbloom79: Do your dad and mine know each other? I have to read this book. My father is a very confused, gambling addict who hid his addiction for decades. The extent of his issues were hidden largely by a fairly high income and lots of travel and being away from the family. While I was in college he went to Vegas and took a cash advance for a few thousand on my credit card. Never paid back. I assumed it was easy to get comped for a free room in Vegas and to have a casino host know your father (it isn't).

He racked up dept which resulted in me bailing out my parents more than a few times. Like the time the dog was on death's door after being attacked by a Doberman. Hey, dad maxed the credit card out, she's about to die, can you just pay for the $5000 surgery? If not, little Chloe will die. Thanks dad.

He still to this day will not admit the extent of his problem even though it has left him alone, running from bill collectors, and with ever-changing addresses. He called last week and I just do not have the energy to return it. I finally did and his number was disconnected. Seems he is running again. He will say he wants to come visit, I will get stressed about it and feel compelled to let him stay with us, then he will not show. Just like last time. So toxic.

@nicepony: I take it you don't like the medium? There are a lot of wonderful works out there, and it is a shame if you refuse to read them because they are told in graphic form. I highly recommend Maus - it is harrowing, and sad, and would not have the same effect if told in novel format.

Thanks so much for this. I've been a big fan of Laurie Sandell's ever since she spoke to my journalism class in NYU; I can easily see why she would be the type of interviewer that subjects could open up to, and I have incredible respect for both her candor and her ability to relate her own experiences.

Is she my sister? I was raised by a sociopathic father who stole my identity and while I haven't spoken to him in 7 years the family rallies around him and casts me as the black sheep. While I've never had a substance abuse problem I've never EVER had a healthy relationship with a man despite a lot of therapy. But I have hope.
And yes I'm still terrified of my father. The key to living with that? Credit watch, not speaking to him and a commitment to myself that if he does anything criminal again I'll report it to the police.

Another great book along these lines is Geoffrey Wolf (brother of Tobias) The Duke of Deception, about their sociopathic father.

@nicepony: Wow, someone arrived on the judgmental train. Have you read Impostor's Daughter? It certainly has way more emotional depth in one page than the entirety of the "Cathy" pantheon, and I see no comparison at all between a cartoon strip with a character who is helpless before chocolate and whose most known remark is "Ack!", and this intimate and emotionally revealing work about someone's real life.

I was sent a reader's copy about two months ago. Thought it to be a self-involved nothing read. The comparison to "Cathy," isn't about catch phrases and chocolate, but that it panders to readers in the same way. It's sad girl "Wow, you know my life" writing. The posts on here seem to testament to that.

And at risk of being asshole, if you read praise press/hype about the book here in comments, they are all oddly similar in terms of construction, verbage, etc to those who "love," the book.

Me thinks pr people are running this shit show.

Okay, this? Looks seriously wonderful. If you replaced "taking out credit cards in other people's names" with "cheating on wives and moving across the country out of spite when we didn't approve of it" then...you would have my dad. Like, my exact dad. Right down to the facial hair. I am totally going to have to buy this.

@bluebears: I recommend Craig Thompson's Blankets about his struggles coming to terms with his extremely religious family and background. Or his travel journal Carnet De Voyage, where Thompson spent time in Europe and Morocco.

There is a wealth of graphic novel memoirs out there.

@hovy: I second the recommendation for Craig Thompson's Blankets.
But another graphic novel/graphic memoir that is both fabulous and similar in a way to Sandell's (father/daughter stuff) is Alison Bechdel's Fun Home: A Family Tragic Comic.
Amazing stuff. And in Bechdel's case the art is also phenomenal.
