While overall this red carpet was — how to put this delicately? — not what one would hope, there were some very, very bright spots indeed.

Last night was fashion's biggest night of the year and everyone - and we do mean everyone - was there. Screw the Oscars! For fashionistas, the Metropolitan Museum's "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity" was the real proving ground:

Okay, let's do this thing. First of all, let's just admit it: the red carpet was confusing. Even the Good stuff was confusing. Even the "safe" stuff was confusing. And all the woman-eating sea creatures? Extremely confusing.

It's going to be okay. After the train-wreck that was the Golden Globes, the stars all showed, chastened and sheepish and back in form for Saturday's SAGs. Christina, Marion, Penelope...it's so nice to have you back!

Like sparkles? You'll dig this year's Golden Globes red carpet, which was blinding. But between the jewel tones and the grown-up clothes, the stars kept it classy.
