Also, this article only discusses the efficacy for women of "advanced maternal age" - 35 and up - and the one Swedish study only looked at women 38 and up. It doesn't discuss whether PGS is useful for couples with other reasons for infertility, like anovulation, uterine problems, or male factor infertility.

Is the PGS strictly to determine which embryos might be the most viable? Or does it also involve screening for potential abnormalities so that women are less likely to have a child with birth defects? Because if it's the latter, I would think women would still prefer it.

@BeckySharper: But if you're already having fertility problems and you only get this one chance to have kids because the procedure is so expensive, then a procedure that so markedly reduces the likelihood of success would seem to have more cost and than benefit, no?

@Blueberry26: That's how it seems to me, yeah. But I can certainly see women saying "I can't go through all this trouble and have a damaged child." So they'd be willing to accept a lower pregnancy rate in exchange for a near-guarantee that the fetus wouldn't have genetic abnormalities.

@BeckySharper: The latter. Most people use it, as far as I know, to screen for disease or congenital defects.

@Maritsa: Although in that case it's usually called PGD - preimplantation genetic diagnosis.

At any rate, my clinic only did this for screening for diseases. They never tried to sell it to me to increase my chances of success.
