i think there is a way for bristol to ameliorate her prior statements with her new found idea that abstinence is the only fool proof method of birth control, without parading her poor son around as a "consequence." here it is:
while abstinence is the only way to 100% effectively prevent unplanned pregnancies, it is not realistic to presume every teenage girl and boy will abstain from sex until marriage. for this reason, methods of contraception should be taught in high school so the young men and women of america can focus on building their education before building a family.
I just don't understand how you can not use protection all the time. I guess I must have been scared sh**less as a teenager because I waited to 18 and that thing was covered 100% of the time. I was terrified by the consequences. And I never had an unintended pregnancy. It's just not that hard.
Her message, which is essentially what Meghan McCain has been complaining about, is that ALL OF THIS RELIES ON THE GIRLS. We are the ones who are held to a different standard, we are the ones who will have survive through the tragedy of underage sex and we are the only ones who can apparently keep our pants on. The Republicans are essentially saying that girls + sex = consequences, which is incredibly unfair, judgmental and misogynist. I understand we are actually the ones confronted with this, since odds are the dad will run for the hills, but we need to make both teenage girls and boys understand the proper sexual protection one can use to protect themselves.
I seem to recall reading somewhere (maybe here?) that Bristol had sold the rights to photos and stories to People way back when the baby was first born. I think she may have been contractually obligated to do this. And I suspect when the deal was first brokered, the esteemed governor was the one calling the shots. I don't doubt for a second that Sarah Palin is pimping her kid out to appease the conservative base she needs for 2012. So much for family values.
I'm fairly new around here, don't like to start arguments, and I'm really hoping this isn't considered thread jacking, but the last few comments have been really awful. "Bristol is stupid." "Her bastard son will be a serial killer." "No one under 30 should be allowed to talk."
Seriously?!?! Seriously?!?!
Stop it guys! These comments aren't advancing the conversation and honestly, they just make you look bad. I hate sounding "high and mighty," but I couldn't sit here and not say anything.
@tigerpop: Just because you're part of the demographic doesn't make your sweeping generalizations and stereotypes less offensive. Kanye West uses the N word, but that doesn't mean it's something that can really be dropped in polite, casual conversation without risking controversy and potentially offending others.
If you really feel that that age-based discrimination is a good idea, I think perhaps you, yourself should start the movement and refrain from talking anymore.
@demidan: How do you make the leap that, because of his mother's comments, this child is going to grow up to be a serial killer? Plenty of people grew up feeling unwanted, and I'm pretty sure most of them didn't go on to kill people.
Ugh. This just ... no. Even though most teenage mothers aren't put in the national spotlight or have to be on the cover of People, I have trouble feeling sorry for Bristol Palin because she at least has a roof over her head and sufficient funds to pay for whatever she or her baby needs, which is more than a lot of people can say for themselves right now. I do feel sorry for her kid, though. Even if he's an infant what a confusing message to project: Mommy loves you, but she also thinks you're a huge mistake.
As a child of a teen mom, who graduated with her class, and with honors, I am offended by the uniformed position that Bristol takes, and more shocked at her parents for encouraging her to court the media. She could be using her position of power to talk about education and health care for young mothers. She could be talking about the need for more comprehensive sexual education. Or, she could STFU, get her GED, go to college, and love her son.
Her remarks remind me of my mother. When she found out I had a boyfriend, she freaked out because if I began having sex, I would become pregnant and having a baby would interfere with my education.
As if it was impossible exercise any control over my own body, either by preventing or terminating a pregnancy. To people like the Palins and my mother, God intended sex to result in pregnancy, and to interfere with that plan is unthinkable.
Jamie Lynne Spears is also a teen mom and she's making a go of it and also dealt with some of the backlash that Bristol is. However, Jamie Lynne decided to keep her pregnancy and life with the baby relatively private. I feel like the media is making an example of Bristol and that she's not ready for it, and that her mother is pushing her to be the face of abstinence education (since clearly it worked for her). Having a child when you're not ready at any age is really hard, and I hope that her and her child are getting the support they need.

I think that's a little harsh. How many people were much more sensible at her age?
She has a lot of pressures-from the media, from her family, from people like us-to deal with, and I'm surprised she hasn't completely broken down under them.

I'm an only child. There's a bit of a logic fail, there.

She does look nice on the cover though, and that baby is adorable.

Right, but still, calling her a ridiculous person takes that one thing and uses it to damn everything about her.
