Megan, the new trailer of the Star Trek movie makes me want to see it ASAP! If your Dad is from the William Shattner school of foam rocks, he may be disappointed. It looks more racy and less clothed than usual!

@BlueLilly: Good or bad, I am looking forward to seeing it, if only because it looks to be fresh. I was more the purist once, thinking they could no "violate" the original series like this, but frankly, I think it brings it into the 21st Century and makes the characters a little fuller.

I think we have to remember that as important as SecState is as a cabinet position, it is ultimately the President that is the go-to guy for Foreign Policy.

For an example of the limits of SecState, please see Condi's recent attempts to promote peace in Israel/Palestine. Not only was it a case of too little, too late, but also an example of something that needs Presidential involvement to even attempt.

I heard about the letter from former big shots in the military, asking for an end to "Don't Ask; Don't Tell." If the military were to accept the end of that policy, I think it would strike a major blow for gay rights, and make it harder to argue that gay couples do not deserve the right to marry.

The only problem with Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State is, of course, Bill, and not just because of his financial dealings since he left office. I said it back during the Democratic primaries: how easy will it be for Hillary to be effective, when she's married to a hands-on ex-President like Bill? He won't sit quietly on the sidelines while she goes about her business, and you know she'll ask him his opinion on things because of the wealth of knowledge he has. He's an albatross around her neck if she sets foot outside the Senate.

Also, I hate sleeping in a lot of clothes- but damn if my house isn't freezing.
Last nights attire: Xl Timberland Sweatpants (they are some heavy monsters, thanks ExMaryMartha!), Longsleeve longjohn shirt (thanks again Ex!), and long tshirt over that.

@SisterMaryMartha: I refuse to turn on the heat b/c it's so fucking expensive. However, it's FREEZING up here & I may have to. minisparks & I huddle for warmth and I am wearing 2 pairs of socks to bed, as well as sweats & hooded sweatshirts.

I also have 2 extra blankets on bed. I'M COLD, shit!

@rosasparks: I have not taken my wool socks off - except to shower - in over a month now. Plus am knitting more. Plus have flannel sheets and five blankets, a down tick and Mlle. O to keep my warm. Maine is mostly a five dog night 10 months of the year.

@rosasparks: @SisterMaryMartha: My heat in my apartment is free, but I hate turning it up because I LOVE being cold and the baseboards make scary rattling noises. So I'm the weirdo who blissfully shivers with a thermostat set to 62. I go to bed in a little cami and boxer shorts, but I have a fleece blanket, a satiny-type quilt, and a down comforter on my bed. I LOVE it.

@tscheese: You're a tough lady. I am miserable. Every year I am shocked back into reality and reminded that I live in New England and am fucking cold for a good chunk of the year. You are lucky with the free heat! My heating bill, if I acutally turned on the thermostat, would make me & minisparks go broke. (or more broke than we already are)

@MadameO asks - WWOD?: My feet are ALWAYS cold, even in the humid summer. I wear socks to bed, NAKED. Two pairs of socks are actually not cutting it. I am thinking about wearing my slippers to bed.

@tscheese: My now deceased cat pissed and shat on my down comforter, then I lived my my SO and used his comforter. He got the comforter in the split and I have yet to buy a new one.
SOo, I have a sheet, two duvets, a blanket and my afghan on the bed.

@rosasparks: I am from South Dakota. I grew up in a house that had a heat pump and an oil furnace. Difficulty: the house had originally been quite small, but it was remodeled and added-on-to, and the heat pump was never upgraded until I left home for college.

Winter just isn't warm and cozy unless I'm shivering into a big fleece wrap. It's part of the season for me. I love it.

@rosasparks: @etcerica: I'm finding things to love about this season, but I agree that they're making it hard. I saw an online piece breaking down various shows into soundbites and the one for Heroes was "No One Ever Dies." That's a problem when a show has as ostensibly high a body count of regular players as Heroes has had over the last few seasons. I had it when they (SPOILER ALERT if you're behind on Heroes) killed off Noah-then brought him back. Now I don't even believe it anymore. Oh you killed Nathan? Whatever, he'll be back next week. You killed Peter, again?? Suuure you did.

My other issue is that I wish that they would either commit to their storylines and really go there (kill off your characters, show real sadists like the Puppetmaster and actually commit to letting the storyline play out) or don't raise the possibility in the first place. This wishywashiness of not letting anyone face real consequences for anything is ludicrous and takes the teeth out of any drama they do raise. Serious storylines generally dictate that not everyone escapes unscathed.

Back to my nerd cave now...

I think that organized labor's argument is that eliminating the ballot election would just make it a lot quick and easier. AFL CIO has said once they finally get around to the actual NLRB secret ballot election after collecting the signed cards, there's been time for management to poison the environment.
