It depends on the occasion, doesn't it? I suppose, in theory, I dress for my skinny minnie sister (or rather, in a futile attempt to look anywhere near as cute as she usually does). But in reality, I dress for my friends. Who are almost without exception male scientists doing PhDs. Pretty much limits the choice to black hoodie versus blue hoodie... I wore a dress today (because I tore my jeans) and was greeted with shock. I like it that way :)

I really don't have a lot of clothes, so I just wear whatever will pass as semi-appropriate. I always look a little messy, and NEVER professional. But I just hate buying clothes (and shopping in general) so I'd rather keep my small, incomplete wardrobe. I'm working on it, though!

I dress up in things that I can leave the house in. I have a sometimes-crippling anxiety about this, so it can take a while, but mostly I just like to look put together; I think I've inherited my mother and grandmother's scarf-lovin' gene (it's a twofer with the breast cancer gene). I'm pretty sure I don't dress for male attention, because I can get downright surly when on the receiving end. Hmmm.

Who dresses for themselves and what does that even mean? This morning I dressed for a prospective employer in a pencil skirt, cashmere sweater and gold bracelet. I'm home now and changing for my friends into a vintage dress and furry hat and mittens to go iceskating and later I'll change again into a silk slip for my boyfriend. There might be a lot of me in each outfit, but I'm not going to pretend I'm not dressing up for people.

@Wolfiebones: I was just going to say that. I dress for wherever I'm going. If I'm just heading to class then jeans and a t-shirt is a good option. If I'm meeting friends then it might be a casual dress. If I'm going to work of course it's business clothes. OF COURSE I dress for people. It's what we do.

I dress for the occasion, mostly. Nowadays, though, I dont have all that many occasions to dress for, because all I do is work. So, I'll dress professionally for work maybe one day a week if I feel like it. The rest of the time I wear jeans and sneakers or my beloved brown Hunter wellies. (they go with everything!) When an occasion arises, I will bust out some of my finery. Mr. terrible likes it when I doll up, and I also like to make an effort to look better than all the other girls. I suppose that could be considered catty, but I spent a loong time being not-very-good-looking growing up, and now that I've grown into myself and gotten rid of the plague that is cystic acne, I like feeling pretty. I have a passionate love of fashion, and my style of dress reflects that love. Occasionally I'll incorporate a belt or wrap or what have you, but I'm not really into accessories. The weather definitely dictates a lot of my choices, for sure. I get irrationally angry when I see a girl or woman dressed like it's sunny and 75 degrees when it's actually below freezing. Come on ladies, you know you're cold. put a damn coat on.

It varies on my mood in the morning, I think. Sometimes I'll wear what's comfortable if I'm feeling lazy, sometimes if I need a confidence boost I wear an outfit for which I've previously received compliments, and sometimes I'll put on things that will get a look or two -- and not in a positive way. This last one usually entails going butch all the way.

I dress for my imagination (my idea of the image that goes with whatever I'm doing or thinking -- for example, the cropped jeans and crazy striped socks I wore to a decidedly non-hipster bowling alley on Friday or my new obsession with looking like I just stepped out of the 1970s) and for people I don't know (I don't think people I know care much about fashion but I really love it when random women compliment my silly glasses).

Today I dressed for the rain and I still came home soaking wet. I was wearing my kelly green dress length rain coat with coordinating boots. I guess the rain didn't approve.

I dress for my boyfriend on dates i know about in advance, which means low cut (so, like... never. Since we end up eating dinner out all the time anyway, I just wear what I wore to class).

I dress for comfort and a lack of embarassment at school (hello, rotation of comfy express sweaters layered over tanks!)

I dress for other girls when I go out to parties/bars with my friends-- a little slutty, a little fancy, and usually short sleeved and leaving me cold.

I live on the west coast of Canada, charmingly referred to as the "wet coast." So I dress for rain, lots of it. From November until March I am pretty much permanently in a waterproof jacket and galoshes. Right now, though, we are having a cold snap and the rain has turned to snow and it is -10 Celsius outside. In which case I look like that small child from A Christmas Story.

None of it could reasonably be termed "fashionable." But it's warm, functional and comfortable. I look forward to spring and summer when I can start wearing colour and fewer puffy jackets.

@Cerridwen: That would be Randy- "I cant put my ARMS down!" waaaaa. Yeah PA is friggin freezing sometimes and I will not leave the house without as many layers as I can stuff myself into.

I put a lot of effort into dressing up at the office - it's partly for me, but partly because of that idea that you dress for the job you want to have (not that I want my supervisor's job, per se, but I want to project her same air of professionalism). Not at work tends to still be for me, because my friends are pretty fashion-stupid and I'm trying to break out of the t-shirts and jeans rut they still adopt. My boyfriend is, surprisingly, rather fashion-forward, and sometimes I enjoy dressing up because I know he'll appreciate it (he does the same for me).

At the end of the day, I like fashion. I like putting together an outfit and accessorizing, and looking like a grown-up and not a college student.

@susanstohelit: I wish I liked putting together outfits and accessorizing. I notice and appreciate when others do it, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it for myself. I watch a lot of "What Not to Wear" in the hopes that I'll learn something...but all I've gotten so far is the knowledge that a jacket helps an outfit look more "complete." *sigh*
