Target Dog Was Best-Dressed At 'AFI Night At The Movies' I'm a little confused about last night's event, AFI's Night At The Movies presented by Target, at ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood. It seemed to draw some respectable stars — Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Jodie Foster — but then they all had to pose gamely with the Target dog, Bullseye. Oh, and there was an Austin Powers impersonator making the rounds, too. The clothes were equally confusing; the dress code ranged from jeans to gowns, the one constant being that everyone looked pretty uninspiring. Nothing ugly, just...sorry, I fell asleep for a second. The Good, the Bad, the Snooze...after the jump!

The Good:
Jodie Foster knows what works for her and sticks to it. Probably Armani, knowing her.

Cameron Diaz always looks really natural and awesome doing the dressed-down thing.

Jenny McCarthy's frock is surprisingly...fine!

What can I say? I have a soft spot for the "cosmopolitan grandma" look Rita Moreno is sporting. How gorgeous is she?!

The Bad:
I have held a major grudge against Nancy O'Dell since season 1 of Project Runway, when she chose Wendy Pepper's dress and Austin had to go home. So, yes, her inclusion here is pure spite on my part.

Terri Seymour's ruffles are totally wearing her.

Why it's our friend, professional red carpeter Kat Kramer, and her mother Karen!

Comments ranged from 'Scaaary!'‚ to the more flattering 'You look great without the sunglasses"' Raymond plans to sell the painting on eBay, with a starting bid of $3,500." Jonathan Saunders For Target: The Thinking Woman's Guide So I've been thinking long and hard about the whole fast fashion thing: as we all know, it's not all good. But as we also know, it's an economic necessity for a lot of us, especially in the current climate. One of the things that's worst about fast fashion, of course, is its disposability. So the trick, of course, is to buy stuff — even if it's cheap — that we don't want to throw out. In other words, not just buy fun, trendy stuff, but "invest" in things like the new Jonathan Saunders line from Go! for Target, out in October. Cause the British designer's got some gems in there — if you shop carefully. (And even if he does use that really young-looking model who always freaks me out in the Lyell look book.) Accordingly, I've rated all of Saunders' pieces on the criteria of Timelessness, Cuteness, Funness and whether or not it's obviously from Target — suggestions for other criteria welcome!

Andre Leon Talley: Vogue Editor, Style Adviser, Political Surrogate For Obama?
 • Like everyone in Fashion, Vogue Editor at XL Andre Leon Talley has many opinions, feels they should be heard. "Asked how Americans can still look fabulous despite the recession, Talley said, 'Wear something old that you love' until Election Day. 'Then, vote for Barack Obama, who'll fix the economy.'" [NY Daily News]

She is also in talks to design a line of activewear for GK, the company that makes her leotards, which she designs with her mom." [NY Mag]

 • Chanel boycotts Russia because of Georgian situation...?! Oh, wait, no, the conflict just meant they couldn't get the venue they wanted. "A Chanel spokeswoman said the decision to nix Moscow was made in July before the crisis in Georgia as the company could not secure the venue it wanted in the Russian capital." [WWD]
 • Crasher alert! "A man calling himself "Tom Klein" has been infiltrating chic soirees, claiming he works for Women's Wear Daily. This Klein character got caught when he tried to get on the list for last night's Gossip Girl party at the Empire Hotel, hosted by Dior Beauty, a source said. The crasher, claiming to be a senior editor at Fairchild Media, sends e-mails from a fake address. A WWD spokeswoman told Page Six, 'He is not an employee of Fairchild or Condé Nast.'" [P6]
 • Here's how to deal with the recession: Meet the new status phones! "Constructed of precious metals, studded with diamonds and other jewels, and wrapped in exotic leathers, they have struck a chord among the small group of people who can afford them—namely, millionaires and celebrities." [BusinessWeek]
 • Banana Republic courts Details readers...or the other way around? Are they different? "Beginning Wednesday through Sept. 17, each retail location will have extensive in-store magazine branding with "look cards," store displays, signage and fitting room signs. Bananarepublic.com will host a microsite with more style tips from Details and special offers from the retailer." [WWD]
 • Stefano Pilati's beautiful YSL fashion look book being ignored because it's in a free tote. "When the news hit the fashion blogs last week, it was all about the cute bag, not the amazing images of Naomi Campbell, photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. To think, a real ‘It’ bag, for free, considering a Muse starts around $1,395. And, on the handout, the YSL logo is fetchingly printed upside down." [NYT]

 • Todd Oldham admits his show Top Design kind of blows. Okay, not really. "I would not want to be a contestant on this show at all," he says. "It's just too brutal. I said it before, but this is the only show I know on TV that is a thousand times harder than what it looks. It was way, way harder than what it looked like." [Breitbart]
 • Designer and glamorous eccentric Isabel Toledo feted by the fashion elite: "A drag queen performed a cabaret homage to Ms. Toledo—"Isabel, you've chaaaaanged!"—which featured the word "motherfucker." Then Emcee Simon Doonan, of Barney's...narrated a slideshow of Ms. Toledo's life, from 'the Cuban Revolution to this incredibly un-Communist luncheon.'" [Observer]
 • The Hef effect? "At New York fashion week, which kicks off Friday, designers including Phillip Lim, Michael Bastian and Tim Hamilton are expected to show a number of pajama-inspired clothes that are meant to be worn in broad daylight. The looks include colored piping on jackets and shirts, spread-open pajama collars, soft, unpadded jackets that hang loosely off the shoulders — and, of course, voluminous drawstring pants." [WSJ]
 • Jonathan Saunders for Target might be awesome. Why must they tempt us with their fast fashion?! [Fabsugar]
 • "With casual sweaters and sharp suits in shades of black, white and grey, Ji Wenbo became the first Chinese designer to showcase a collection at Japan's Fashion Week in a bid to woo customers in fashion-savvy Tokyo." [Reuters]
 • With fashion in transition, we lack a Savior: "Still, there is no world-beater. There are no names that suggest clear-cut potential both to reshape fashion and somehow with it the global culture of style. There is no one, to take the obvious example, likely to replace Yves Saint Laurent, who died in June and seemingly took with him not merely a genius for conjuring glamour from whole cloth, but also for draping his designs to suit the mood of his time." Cheap Chic? We Might Break The Ban For Isaac Mizrahi Have you seen Isaac Mizrahi's new (last?) line for Target? It's really hard to express how excited I am. And not like in a "I'll buy it cause it's cheap" way but in an "I'd buy it at four times the price and wear it every day" way. It's as though Isaac said, "you want to get rid of me? Here's what you'll be missing, bitches" (not that he'd say that; he's very nice). Everything's kind of Mad Men-esque and tailored but still fun. I'll fight you for it, seriously, after the jump!

New Go! International For Target Line Is Cheap, Excellent Recessionistas, take note: we have a preview of the Go! International for Target Fall line and guess what? It's cute. Like, structured and just retro enough and totally wearable and on-trend without looking silly. Which, of course, means it'll sell out in your size instantly, but a girl can dream. So, did you guys ever used to read girlshop.com? I loved how they described all the clothes as, "wear this on a hot date to (some specific restaurant in New York) with (some speciifc earring) and (some specific shoe.)" I always thought it looked fun to be that didactic, so I've taken the liberty of instructing you on exactly how the following select items from the GO! International line should (and must) be worn, after the jump. (No arguments, please.)

Recessionistance: Richard Chai For Target First Look The dames at Nylon have done a mitzvah and given us a taste of the latest GO for Target collaboration! Richard Chai's a young designer (and one of People's former "sexiest men alive") who's put in stints at Marc Jacobs and TSE and whose own work is characterized by muted shades and a "futuristic-romantic" aesthetic. From what we can see (you gotta shell out for the August issue to see the rest), this collection is both wearable and fun. So come with us to a magical fantasy Target where they have everything in your size, it all looks as good in real life as on the web, and you're the only shopper...hey, a cheapskate can dream.

Here's one to wear when you're doing your editorial assistant thing.

Ooh, and to your second job, waitressing!

For your weekend retail job...

Selling stuff at the flea market...

Freelancing from home...

...and, of course, pounding the pavement!

Target Woos Frugal Fashionistas With New, No-Name Designer Duds targetprivate040815.jpgTarget: Is it the best store in the entire universe? Yes! Yes it is! And I'm willing to throw an extra exclamation point in there now that I've seen the first little twinklings of the retailer's new GO International Private Collection line. GO International, as many know, is the line for which well-known, high-end designers have translated their signature looks and sold them at unbeatable Target price points, much to the delight of an adoring public. But GO International's soon-to-debut Private Collection takes the celebrity designers out of the equation altogether, presenting trendy looks at those at, again, unbeatable Target prices. While some of it is a little much for my taste (say, anything too shiny), on the whole, the debut collection offers some great, cool basics. In the words of Stephen Colbert: H&M is now on notice. Some images after the jump.
