GOOD! In the article earlier, when it mentioned how the adaptation "should" be updated because of how different a teen's world is now, all the reasons were listed (Facebook, sexting, etc.) and it made me shudder.
I'm not familiar with Diablo Cody. I know she wrote Juno, which I saw on a plane and had to turn off about 5 minutes in when Dwight Schrute said "that's one diddle that can't be undone, homeskillet". At that point I went "fuck this shit" and watched Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
That said, I do love the idea of a SVH movie, set in the 80s.
Didn't they drive a fiat? And they were size 6's right? I hated them both... I just read the series for Lila and Enid. I also loved Regina/1Bruce1 until he broke her heart and killed her. =*(
I assume this will be just as realistic as the novels I read as a pre-teen, where no one ever had sex in high school. Although Bruce might try to assault you by untying your bikini top. And Don't Go Home With John, of course.
Then they all went to college and became sluts! Sluts, I tell you! I was traumatized.
Will Regina the Deaf Girl die from cocaine? If Elizabeth could fall into a coma after a motorcycle wreck, that would also be great.
I hope that she adapts the book where Jessica is starring as Lady MacBeth and her dowdy understudy befriends her, imitates her, and eventually STEALS HER ROLE! Because she was ambitious and willing to do whatever it takes, ruin as many people's lives, so long as she could make a name for yourself as the star of a high school production of Macbeth, WHICH IS WHAT LADY MACBETH WOULD DO! I mean, it's so meta.
Also, looking forward to a bandeau top bikini resurgence.
@Vivelafat says Sweep the leg, Johnny.: I would so co-sign that! I LOVE me some Christopher Pike, hell I still dust off "Remember Me" and "Spellbound" whenever I want a break from the text books, usually around Christmas time.
@Jessi Ramsey: Absolutely. I think its a damn shame Palladino isn't on Hollywood's speed dial but Cody is. Sure, Cody's ok, but Palladino def. has a more bookish appeal. I watched "Gilmore Girls" for the literary references alone. My favorite moment had to be Rory and Paris watching "The Power of Myth" on VHS in their hotel room while everyone is partying during Spring Break. Diablo Cody wouldn't write that. Palladino captured bookish nerd like no one else on tv and wasn't Elizabeth of Sweet Valley, a kind of early Rory minus the blonde hair?
I am extremely excited about this. In middle school my best friend and I used to trade shopping bags full of SVH books. I remember I even found a typo, I forget what it was, in one of the books so I wrote the publishing copy and they sent me a re-edited new copy. I forsee this to be awesome.
@likepenguins: Everybody hated Enid. Do you remember the Sweet Valley board game, where you could be one of the twins, Lila, or Enid? Oh, my friends and I always wanted to be Lila and never wanted to be Enid.
@SharonTaint: Yeah, she's kind of like a white female Tyler Perry in the sense that it's not just Juno or Jennifer's Body it's "Diablo Cody's Juno" and "Diablo Cody's Jennifer's Body"

Elizabeth: "Jessica, I'd like you to meet my new friend Lisa. She's from....Detroit".
Jessica: "Oh hi! Elizabeth mentioned a new black girl moved in next door. Your family seems so nice, like the Cosby Show!"
Elizabeth: "Jessica, black people are just the same as white families, and we shouldn't see color, because we're all alike".

That didn't mess me up at all as a kid. Well, maybe a little.

Expectations, they are set low

Set in the '80s, much like Diablo Cody's hairstyle.
