Bad Mother, Good Writer
Can You Write About That Time You Posed Naked, And Also Things Of Substance?

hear hear, i cringe at the cool moms who try to be friends with their daugthers and let them do anything. When you're older yes but especially during your teen years you need someone that listens to you/is there for you but is also able to put you in line.

If my mother EVER said that she loved her spouse more than me, it would have really hurt me. We never had much but she always put us first, and you know what, she did it without bitching. She made the choice to have us and she loved us unconditionally. She thinks she made mistakes but she made me the strong woman that I am.
Having said that, I am not sure that I am capable of the sacrifices my mother made. Which is why I will probably never have kids. It's one thing to give your kid junk food or be late to pick them up from school, lose your temper, etc. But going ON AND ON about loving your spouse more and being more or less indifferent to your kids just seems....awful. Or, maybe I'm missing something completely.

I really hate when "refreshingly honest" is just code for "really, I'm kind of an asshole." I didn't come away with a new perspective on what it means to be a "good" mother anymore than I would've if she would've wrote an essay about how she liked one kid more than the other, or how she thinks one of her kids is kind of funny looking.

Greatest. Line. Ever. (I'm actually stealing it for my Facebook status...so thanks :))
But, I completely agree. I still haven't figured out my opinion on this woman yet, from the quotes that have been posted on here my initial reaction is wtf. As a mom I can't support it. In particular the husband love VS the children love.
I'm listening to the Fresh Air interview now, maybe that will change my thoughts on her. Hopefully. But so far she just sounds like a self centered toolbag.

Actually, she started writing mysteries after she had her kids.
She did, however, have a career as a criminal defense attorney before her marriage.

I am super confused about this woman. The exerpts I have read seem rather self indulgent and insensitive to her kids. But I have heard great things about the interview you mentioned. What in particular resonated with you?
