@kysm: I can't afford cable either ($62 per month here). What I did was, I bought a Slingbox and gave it to a friend who has cable. He hooked it up to his cable box and it streams cable right to my laptop. The box was a flat fee of $150 and there are no monthly charges. So I saved myself $594 for this year and then $744 per year for each additional year I have it. It's awesome because my landlord provides limited basic cable with my rent, but that's only the network channels and then MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN (I missed Lifetime, TBS, USA, etc.). My friend has Verizon FIOS, so I get like 300 channels now!

My friend has a reconditoned bakelite phone and it is quite fun to use and I love the sound it makes as you dial. However you cannot of course use it for any calls requiring a touch pad.

@Glitterbug (likes life shaken, not stirred): I remember being obsessed with the Lancome alligator-textured gold compact when I was a broke thirteen-year-old. It just seemed so elegant. It's one of the few things with which I was obsessed at that age, that I didn't later obtain. Now, sadly, my tastes are a lot more expensive. And I'm still broke.

(I am old enough to remember sneaking into the hallway of my parents' house after bedtime and dialing my girlfriend's number by feel in the dark under a blanket, so they couldn't hear the rotary dial going around and know I was on the phone.)

@ItchykooParker: We had a rotary phone. I put a super long extension cord on it, and would drag it into my room for late night calls to friends. I'd hide it under the covers and chat.

Of course, the long cord, mapping the phone's travels from the table to my room always gave me away, so eventually my parents would come in & be all, 'get off the damn phone!'

@morninggloria: At the historic house where I give tours, we still have the family's old rotary phone, looks like original to the house (1938). It still has the old two-letter exchange printed on it...and it is still the office number at the house!

Can you believe it that Vogue at one time was one of the first magazines to publish photos of concentration camps? I love Lee Miller's work, I saw a beautiful exhibit many years ago, which was opened by her son, who still spoke lovingly of his mother, inspite of the difficulties growing up with her.
