"Thinking Woman's Crumpet" Hopes To Turn On Smart Ladies |

Not that I have a problem with it. I gotta find a new replacement for PLaygirl.

Also, is "the thinking woman's crumpet" a common term? I read it in a description of a British comedian, and now I'm wondering if it's a "thing".

I think originally it applied only to women and dates from the late 1960s.

I did try and start the trend of calling Louis Theroux "The Thinking Woman's Pikelet" but alas it never caught.

And, why does every mention of women's erotica make it sound like women are afraid of reading sexy stories or viewing sexy images and we need to be persuaded to enjoy porn? Who are these porn-phobic women? I don't know any.

From the website: "We draw on research about what women find erotic..."
..and if that happens to be a woman, you're not really a woman. Even if the website said, once, that it recognized its slant, I'd feel more comfortable.

That being said, I looked at the magazine's website, and at least for me, it does present a very different aesthetic. I think I... might actually see the appeal in this.

And I LOVE your screenname. I just finished that book!

For example, on average, women prefer:
* men who are not muscle-bound
* men with more feminine face shapes
* men with attractive faces
* images that show the subject's character and the environment he is in.
WOAH. WOMEN PREFER ATTRACTIVE FACES ON MEN. No mention of the fact that what constitutes "attractive" varies from person to person. The problem with advocating ANY type of beauty as the norm is that it reduces every one who isn't attracted to that as outside of the norm.
Give me variety, people. I'd rather read erotica anyway, 'cause then I get to put whoever I want in my head in the story.

I always get more jazzed with books or movies because I get turned on by a man's moves, his actions, the character he's playing. Just looking at a six-pack doesn't do it necessarily, whereas apparently boobs and bush on a page can make it work for some men. Maybe a mag isn't the best format. Just because we want the sexual freedom of men doesn't mean we need to reach it in the same way if there's a better way for us.
That's not meant to push the stereotype that women aren't turned on by visuals, but maybe we need something more or something better?

I think this is more like it. I read the "Female Gaze" statement on the Filament website and their POV is that different things turn men and women on. So yeah, many men might be turned on by looking at some woman's vag, but for most women, staring at a dick isn't gonna push our buttons. So I think that's what they mean by choosing photographs that appeal to the female gaze. They may or may not be explicit, in various stages of undress, etc. but that doesn't make them less "erotic". And, uh, flipping through the site, I can agree that I like their style. haha
@electricbubbles: To their credit, though, they acknowledge that women's tastes vary and they try to cater to that too.

Also, has she never seen Sweet Action? That didn't get far off the ground, alas.
It is true that there's a shortage of erotica featuring men, targetted at straight women though.

Hot Dog on a Stick -- featuring ball park food and athletes
Cheese, Please -- Beefcake with trays of delicious, delicious cheese
Dude du jour -- Featuring gourmet food and scantily clad men cooking it
Buttered Muffin (for the lady loving ladies) -- sexy women and various pastries
...I definitely could keep going.
