    Scientific studies show that women of child-bearing age (and after) have a greater accumulation of fat cells because it provides a healthier environment for gestation. Combine that with our predisposition for sweet foods and the mouth feel of fatty foods, add a nearly completely sedentary lifestyle (especially for the successful intellectual) and you have a recipe for a well-padded female populace and we should all shout STFU at the top of our lungs to anyone who thinks either of these women looks unhealthy.

    Here's a true story: I am a nicely rounded-out woman, and by societal standards could definitely stand to lose weight. Yet year after year my doctor tells me that my cholesterol is fine, my blood pressure is low and I am quite healthy. My boyfriend is skinny and runs constantly, eats low-fat everything and pays great attention to his health. Yet because of his family history and cholesterol, his doctors have been warning him since his 20s that he is in danger of developing heart disease.

    Body mass does not equal life expectancy or general health, unless we are talking EXTREMES.

    OK but wait. As I read this, all the people he's quoting were anonymous or semianonymous commenters on websites. Isn't this like quoting three commenters at Jezebel saying some nasty things about dudes and taking it as evidence of a groundswell of ball-cutting cybersuccubusness? Unless someone actually pops up on MSNBC saying this shit, or a political opinion maker of some kind signs his name to it (whether in print or online), I am inclined to simply roll my eyes and ignore. The second dude quoted is clearly not even a liberal (given his use of the pejorative "lib" shorthand).

    @Princess Leela: yes, likewise some commentators in this thread seem to believe the author of the article is the one making these statements. The comments are, to be sure, fucked up but I don't think they represent a groundswell of liberal thinking.
