That S.D abortion thing is the biggest sack of bullshit I've ever heard. If I were the clinic and head to read the "abortion ends a human life," here's how I would do it: "Well, I am required by law to tell you abortion ends a human life, but this law was written by a man who hates women."

There's something vaguely similar in Tulsa-well, a clinic isn't being shut down, but they're challenging a law that requires women to get and look at their ultrasound before they abort. And the doctor has to describe it. One of the proponents of this anti-choice bill said something about how it "helps women make their decision." No, sir. They've already made it. You just don't like it.

Sounds like that poor little girl maybe has a leptin deficiency. I'm not a biologist or an endocrinologist, but I think leptin deficiency is more common in South Asia than the rest of the world. I seem to remember a news story about two Pakistani siblings who had insatiable hunger and would go through the neighbors' garbage looking for food. Totally treatable with the right medicine.

That marriage annoucement rejection is ridiculous, because the paper that rejected it isn't a small town, independently owned paper - it's owned by Gannett. Gannett, a publicly traded company, who run annoucements of civil unions in many of their papers. And trust me, the corporate staff there doesn't give a hoot if you're marrying a man or a woman, they only care that you're willing to pay to run your annoucement. That publisher overstepped his boundaries. To hell with making your readers uncomfortable. To a degree, that is what journalism is all about, even if you're located in a bible thumping part of the country.

@TheExperience: We're talking about Southern Utah, where the Spectrum is the predominant paper. The percentage of practicing LDS in the counties served is about 70%. While I don't agree with the local editors decision, at all, it is a decision representative of the vast majority of the readers of that paper. The LDS faith (officially) does not recognize homosexuality as anything other than a mental illness that faith will overcome.

@TheExperience: I work for a paper in a Bible-thumping state and I once begged a lesbian couple who were considering purchasing an announcement for their civil union to do it. Our paper is owned by a big media company that regularly runs same-sex unions/marriages and our dinky paper's policy follows our parent company's. We even put a notice in the paper saying we'd take civil union and same-sex marriage announcements. They ended up deciding not to, possibly because they'd be the first. Perhaps they didn't want the shitstorm that was likely to follow from our more unevolved readers. I was sad about that; I really wanted our paper to be seen as taking that stand and frankly, had been looking forward to the angry calls.

@Penny_Esq: At our local public pools,they refuse anyone entry into the pool just for wearing a tshirt! Other pools used to ban people who weren't wearing swimming caps. Mostly, the hair and fibers can clog the drains, costing more money.

@deeemer: Yeah, public pools have always legislated what people can and can't wear at the pools. Pools in the USA do it all the time. I don't know why we get so shocked over the French telling women what they can/can't wear when we do the same here.

Exactly. A burquini isn't streetwear. It looks like a hooded, loose wetsuit. It seems burquins would actually be extremely hygienic compared to other swimsuits, since they cover most of the body, including hair.

@Penny_Esq: Here in Ireland, you're expected to shower for around 2 minutes and then put your feet in blue disinfectant water before you swim. Must wear a swimsuit, no other clothes. Often must wear flip-flops, no bare feet around the pool. (I originally typed bear feet, which would have been great.)

Having grown up in America, I thought these rules were bizarre. Going to the pool is just a chillaxed thing in the US. But just trust that the pool experience in Europe is very different. I don't think they were wrong to turn her away. Men in France must wear speedos. Don't agree with the pool rules, but you gotta abide by them.

@Agumen: I went to a water park in Bavaria circa... 1994ish? And I don't remember it seeming any different hygiene-wise than an American water park, but I do remember the fact that there were no attendants telling you when you could go down the waterslide, which I thought was crazy and dangerous. I have also been in Turkish baths in Budapest, '03, and I'm sure we showered before we got in, but again, it didn't seem any different from the US custom. On the other hand, I've never not worn a regular bathing suit in a public pool here or abroad.

Oh, but man. That first trip to Europe, in '94? I definitely saw a naked old dude on the beach in Brighton, which blew my 12yo mind. And I think Americans, or at least me, totally think of Europe as a clothing-optional zone when it comes to swimming, and we don't necessarily differentiate between pools and beaches.

@Lyricl: It doesn't sound cheesy. I box too! For exercise. I don't spar, because I have epilepsy, and my neurologist says she will kill me if I reguarly allow myself to be hit in the head.

I belong to a gym that does nothing but boxing. I have never felt more comfortable in a gym. I have never felt more encouraged. I have never felt more welcomed. I have never worked out among friendlier people -- most of them with broken noses and fabulous tattoos.

I'm going to heart you.
