The Dalai Lama does what he does best. Saying one thing and then doing another. Mark my words: There wil be NO WOMAN DALAI LAMA ! Most likely the Karmapa will be appointed the next Dalai Lama, which will be another blow to the Gelugpa tradition.
Nearly a decade ago (eep!) I met him and he said that he wasn't planning on reincarnating and thought the next DL should be chosen democratically by the Tibetan people/diaspora. I guess he figured those elections would be too hard to administer.
I love this man. I was fortunate enough to hear him speak last year, and it was awesome just to be in the same room with him. And now talking about a girl Dalai Lama? He's one cool old dude.
Huh. I was always under the impression that the Dalai Lama said where he was going to be reincarnated, and to which parents, and then the Punchen (sp?) Lama went out and found him again.
Of course, the Punchen Lama has been under house arrest by the Chinese gov't his whole life, so... an election is probably the way to go.
One of the things that impresses me most about this current Dalai Lama is that he absolutely understands and acknowledges the gender issues in Buddhism. He was asked a question about it years ago and addressed it without any evasion, saying it absolutely was a problem and something he cares deeply about.
Even if Buddhism isn't your thing (it's not mine either) his books are extremely interesting and thought provoking. They work on a spiritual and philosophical level.
@tiredfairy: Oh they are, I am just always curious as to how people react to his various statements on sexuality and reproductive rights as opposed to their reaction to the same sentiments when expressed by the Pope.
Also, I do not want to think about (the current) Dalia Lama dying. I know he's had health problems and, ya know, everyone dies, but just thinking about it hurts my heart.
@50FtQueenie: Agreed. I can't even imagine him passing. Both the (current) Dalai Lama and Dick Van Dyke are, I don't know, immortal in my world-view. What that says about me I have no idea.

Still, nice to see him actually working towards remedying the gender inequality he sees as an issue...
