It is rare but it happens. My baby at home is tortoiseshell and aside from white on her belly she is a crazy mix up of grey, black, orange with stipes that are solid and ticked. That to me is a calico male. Cute though and I LOVE the name.
SO: I teach at a theatre camp and a group of the kids were doing jellicle cats as their musical theatre project. We teach K5-12th (not in one group, but there's a big age range in the building) and a little K5 girl was walking with my boss (she was probably in trouble) and she overheard the kids rehearsing.
"What's a jellicle cat?" the little girl asked.
"Well," my boss explained, "it's a cat that goes out at night and does naughty things."
"Oh," mused the child, "We had a jellicle cat once...but karma got him and he got hit by a car one night."
That is a calico, not a tortie, vet. Unless the UK has a different categorization of coat colors? I am le confused. However as stated below, it is impossible for him to be a "true" male (straight XY) and not a Klienfelter male.
I once emailed a successful author about a boo boo in one of her mysteries that referenced a main character having a large MALE calico. I'm sure she hated me for it and is today yelling "ha!" at the computer.
Other oddity in the kitteh world? Female orange cats... but such was my dearly departed cat Sassafras, who was God's most perfect creation *sniff sniff sniff* (Seriously, it's been five years and I STILL cry over that cat.)
@LaComtesse: I didn't know that about female orange cats. but now that you mention it, my sweet sweet dearly departed little Lynch is the only female out of all the orange tabbies I know. I'm sorry for your loss. Its only been 18 months for me, but I still miss her dearly.
@LaComtesse: I took my orange boy to the vet for his first checkup and the vet said that the orange boys are known for being sweet, while orange girls are snotty. I've never known an orange girl, but I can tell you my little dude is the sweetest boy. I named him Harley because the purr never stops!
@morninggloria: That's a great name for a cat. Did she grow to be 50 feet tall and fuck Daniel Baldwin? Or perhaps a mermaid... and then fuck Tom Hanks?
@LaComtesse: I had a little orange girl named Grover. She was probably the sweetest of all the cats I've ever owned. She was happiest curled up in the crook of your arm. She died of cancer 10 years ago and I still miss her, so I understand how you feel about your Sassafras.
@LadySoprano is a Fat-Fighting Superwoman: My two orange boys are the sweetest things ever. They're currently making friends with the new kitten, who is 7 weeks old. Al is a 19 lb. mother cat who can be outrageously protective over his 'kids'.
I'm guessing this isn't a picture of the actual kitteh in question, since this is a calico and not a tortie. (damn Brits and their calling it a tortie anyway. hee.)
