Something else: I was at the Obama rally in Highland, Ind. Friday night, and of the estimated 40K people attending, there sure were an awful lot of white people there. In fact, I'd almost be comfortable in saying there were slightly more white people, but without seeing the whole crowd, I can't be sure.
In any case, as racially divided as NWI is, I sure was thrilled to see so many people supporting the best candidate.
One more thing - I painted the porch pillars, railing etc on Sunday (got a sunburn in November - not easy even in NC - took all damn day) and 2 Obama campaign workers asked me to remember to vote (and I have a sign in my yard). It gave me great pleasure to say "Did that on 10/16! Go get another one!"
Honestly! GOP supporters: If the current occupant (aka comatose in chief) and his corrupt cronies haven't broght on the "End Times" with their shenanigans, Barry sure as hell won't.
Guys, my mother disowned me this weekend after we got into a huge McCain-Obama spat - I think the tipping point was when I asked her about my rights if I were to get raped and impregnated and she said that I shouldn't be spreading my legs in the first place. It's sad, really, that it came to this. I will be very happy once this election is over.
@NefariousNewt, Democratic Poll Challenger: No, I wish she did though - it would make the whole argument more "swallowable". She vowed to never step foot in my house ever again. Sigh....
If it makes y'all feel any better some psychics said that Obama will win. I'm not a psychic but it would be really incongruous if he lost after such a sweeping campaign.
I'm going to hide until Wednesday and then I hope that when I put on the news I see Prop 8 is DENIED.
I went to sleep yesterday a little bit freaked out. Olbermann was showing the recap of the whole election and the negative stuff really got my brain a mess. I woke up this morning and realized that in 24 hours I get to vote and for the first time, there is a really, really strong chance my guy is gonna win. Now I'm just all smiley!
My siser used the Crayola multicultural range at an inner city school she taught art at. She then filled in at a pratically all white school, brought the multicultural colored pencils and GOT COMPLAINTS FROM PARENTS.
My fears have shifted away from election rigging and towards the right-wing nutjobs that Palin has scared up at her rallies. All it takes is one of these crazies with a high powered sniper rifle.
The smear tactics of the past 2 months have given these zealots all the "justification" they need to act.
If I had a say, I'd just lock Obama in the oval office for 4 years so he can work on his agenda for the country.
@HeyApples: I busted my ass to get to an Obama rally JUST to check out the security. The Secret Service is no joke. I peed agents on every roof and in nearly every surrounding window from any conceivable distance. Not to mention the fact that his plane is constantly escorted by 4 fighter jets.
@ceejeemcbeegee: Why did you have to go and ruin the image I had of you peeing on all the Secret Service agents you saw, with your Jezebel-issued shenis?
@treecut just registered to vote in her new town!: I was imagining some sort of system whereas the secret service agents were like those little dinosaur sponges and you had to pee on them to get them to grow lifesize...
@ceejeemcbeegee: Totally. I am actually starting to get annoyed at the paranoia. Lately I've been travelling to other countries that are not majority white and EVERYONE is like, I don't want Obama to win because they will kill him. I am like, seriously people? You are going to live in fear of these right wing nutbags? No. The secret services is more professional than it ever has been. Every president deals with assassination attempts and the right wing white supremacist groups in America are old and well known to the FBI. He is far far ahead in every poll. 7 points ahead in Pennsylvania is still seven points that McCain has less than 24 hours to shrink. Not gonna happen. Kerry NEVER polled this well. This is NOT 2004. The only thing to fear is voter suppression and GOP litigation, and even that I think will have to bow to the Obama campaign's multi-state, multi-faceted winning strategy.
The work is done. Take a cue from your man Obama, play it cool, and enjoy voting in a historic election!
@HeyApples and ceejeemcbeegee: I was worried about that, too. In addition to knocking on wood laminate everywhere I go, I'm praying that he's granted whatever super powers 50 Cent has, just in case, knock on wood laminate.
@ceejeemcbeegee: I remember the Secret Service protection Jesse Jackson had in '84. Nice people, very professional, vigilant without the need for Red Bull infusions, and packing serious heat. I was up on stage with him at one point, and figured anybody who tried to take a shot at him was not going to get very far with it if they did. So people need to stop worrying about Obama's safety as President -- he is protected by the best.
@NefariousNewt, Democratic Poll Challenger: some people just don't know how to enjoy a good thing! It reminds me of all the people who after Obama won the primaries were like he'll never win, omg the racists, he's too weak, he's too cool, he doesn't have enough policy details no he is too wonky. Oh young people won't vote, Hispanics won't vote for him, white women won't vote for him, blah blah blah. Yes, there are crazy irrational racists out there. But guess what? There are WAY LESS of them than thinking people who are willing and excited to vote for Obama. Frank Rich's recent column really lays it out. [www.nytimes.com] Basically it has been a hater parade since day one and Obama has patiently outlasted all of them.
It's a good thing Obama is a confident man, because if he listened to his supporters he'd be shitting himself.
@J.D.Regent: Well put. I've been surprised by the paranoia over this. It seems like the next words after this fear is that it's going to be 1968 all over again. Folks, that was FORTY years ago. Can we not imagine that security procedures have improved just a wee bit since then? Do we think that white presidents never have assassination attempts made against them? Just because Obama is black doesn't mean he's got some sort of magical bullet attracting ability.
@J.D.Regent: So true. It's been hard being a optimistic Obama supporter from early on, eh? I'm planning on partying like it's 1992 (BUT BETTER) tomorrow night!
@J.D.Regent: I think he's confident and smart. He may have the same jitters as everyone else, but he will never show the people one moment of doubt. If he did, that would kill his campaign faster than Rev. Wright or Bill Ayers ever could have.
People, it may not be over in the literal sense, but it is over in the spiritual sense. Time to finish mopping up. Tomorrow a new day dawns -- get ready for it!
I'm a dual citizen (Canadian and American) and I've never even lived in the US, so I didn't know I could vote in your election. But man, as soon as I learned, I got that ballot in the mail SO fast.
@Janky: NICE WORK!! So many people don't know that they can vote even if they've never set foot in the US. Citizenship by blood - hurrah! The get out the vote effort in Britain has featured a fair amount of educating about this...
To all those worried about the Bradley Effect: how can that even be possible. The McCain camp has given even "I'm not a racist" racists enough excuses to NOT vote for Obama other than his race... words like terrorist, communist, socialist, Marxist, Muslim.
This past weekend I was canvassing in Vegas. The bell guy at our hotel noted my Obama shirt and offered, "Just so you know, I'm voting for the guy who's NOT a Marxist." Erm... what does that have to do with taking my bags up my suite? Anyway, I don't really think these people believe Obama's a Marxist, or that they know what Marxism is anyway. But "Marxist" or "Muslim" is a more acceptable way to say "Black" or "N*****r". ya dig? So the Bradley effect... not so much.
