And this show has been on for YEARS!

When we were in high school, he was still a Chicago cop and Jerry Springer bouncer on the side. My BFF's school had a raid and he was one of the cops. All the kids were chanting "Steve! Steve!" He confiscated her pager.

Is this show as fake as the Springer show? I have several friends who were on Springer, and the shows they were on were completely staged, and producers told them what to say and how to react during commercial break times, and even provided a more revealing wardrobe for some of them.

Is this show the same? If so, then I imagine a free trip to Chicago, free hotel, and/or renumeration for their appearance (like my friends got for Springer) might be the incentive for would-be guests.

Um, yelling at people to get their act together is bad, but calling law enforcement would be better? First off, it's not either/or. Second, the police have a mixed record with domestic situations, especially when children are at risk. Often, there isn't enough evidence to even arrest anyone. And getting arrested doesn't always make an abuser change their behavior. Sometimes shame is the thing.

Er, is the letter about how the show inspired the letter-writer to get a job a backhanded compliment? It could totally be read as, "I watched your show every day and it was so horrendous, I had to get out of the house and avoid it."

People want to be on TV, plain and simple. They get a free trip to whatever city the show tapes in (NYC or LA) and usually get meals paid for or at least some kind of per diem. Once there, the producers "coach" them on what to do/say, usually encouraging them to amp up their...what's the word I'm looking for? Craziness? At least, that's what I've heard from friends who have worked as producers on these kinds of shows.

@hellonini9: Exactly. I worked at Springer (as a semester-long intern, so hopefully I have enough time to redeem myself before I meet my maker for the things I was required to do for school credit). Many of the guests have never traveled outside their town, let alone flown on a plane. A free vacation sounds pretty nice. Especially since their probably not doing anything other building their basement meth labs. Just sayin'.

I have asked myself on the few occasions when I have watched the trainwrecks that sign up to be featured on the show stand there while Wilkos gives them a verbal smackdown and throws chairs at them and kicks them off the stage.
