On a completely shallow note, I was surprised to find out that Hawking was British. Can't they give his little robot voice thingie a British accent?

Anyway, I hope he gets well. Even if I have heard he is an ass when it comes to the women in his life.

He is truly a fascinating man. A modern day Albert Einstein, IMO. If this illness spells his passing, the brain of the world will lose more than a few cells.

For some years now, I have been dreading the notion of what we would do (in terms of scientific endeavour) when Hawking passes. I am horribly morbid, yes, but it is one of life's most cruel ironies that one of our best and brightest is so blighted with ill health.

@Majrhoulihan: I do think so. Although Hawking's level of genius is something I have to question whether it can be learned. I think he is somehow the union of both a brilliant mind from the offset, and the enforced situation where it's full potential was able to be exploited. It's a horrible conclusion, but that's what I believe.

My friend (a maths genius) has an unshakeable hatred for Mr Hawking. If you even dare to mention his name to her she freaks out and starts telling you he stole everything he knows.

I however think he seems like a nice chap, and my mum lives in his old house. Get well soon pickle!

@nessalicious: I've met scientists who also say he is by turns "nuts," "full of crap," and "insane." I'm not wise enough in the ways of science to understand why they think this.

Personally, a huge gift to humanity in the 20th century was his bringing of quantum physics into everyday discussion. A Brief History of Time is awesome, the book as well as the movie. Never mind the fact that the man is a medical miracle.

@nessalicious: a.) jealous of your mom. b.) it's science... if ideas weren't borrowed and reshaped we would never get anywhere! haha. i get all excited when somebody famous publishes the same thing i have been thinking or working on because it means i'm not crazy. (never can tell on that one...) sucks to be trumped, but that's the way it works.

hazaa for the advancement of the sciences!

p.s. i'm not mad at einstein either, and he stole a lot. as did shakespeare apparently, but that's not really my area.

@SomeAuthorGirl: @Beets.Go.On: I can't find my geek friend online to clarify this to me as she is currently working on her thesis, but I agree it's something that I am not science smart enough to understand, but about borrowing a bunch of other ideas and tying them all together in a knot, and passing them off as his. Ack.

Damn her not being online, she would relish this opportunity to spout on!

@Beets.Go.On: People "stealing" others' ideas is unfortunately not uncommon in the sciences (Not that I know if he did, researcher wars are drama.)

And in the course on one's lifetime in research one will recant parts of theories a couple of times. It's the way it works. If someone got new data that compiled with the old data you knew about doesn't fit your model, you have to modify or discard your model.

@nessalicious: In any area of research and study, theories are borrowed, deconstructed, reconstructed... It is what it is.

I feel like in the circles in which Dr. Hawking works, there are cyclical periods of, for lack of a better term, hating on certain established researchers. It seems tremendously competitive and harsh sometimes! I suppose that really helps drive progress in the field, though, you know? Perhaps that he sparks so much controversy is a driving force in that it will at least inspire others to disprove his theories.

At any rate, he is a great mind and I wish him a swift recovery!
