Shorter Jan Moir: "I am sorry if you people are too stupid to understand the delicate and complicated nature of my contention that gay people lead dangerous lifestyles and should expect to die." #janmoir
"I would like to say sorry if I have caused distress by the insensitive slapping of your face, so soon after you published something asinine, inflammatory and homophobic. Obviously, a great deal of pain in your face has been felt and I regret any pain caused. Had I know that your face was so sensitive to high speed contact with my open hand, I would never have initiated a slap. I am not - unlike your left cheek - feeling surprise and pain a slap has caused." #janmoir

I was one of the 25,000 people who complained to the PCC about the original article. This 'apology' is almost as bad. She blames "people who are determined to be outraged". This from a Daily Mail columnist. Priceless.
@Diziet_Sma: I'm finding this to be the lulziest aspect. If you're a Mail columnist, you pretty much forfeit your right to accuse anyone else of misplaced zomg panic and outrage! #janmoir
Insensitive timing? No, Jan, it would be insensitive (and just plain wrong) to publish that article pretty much ever. You just don't use someone's death to publicize your offensive beliefs and hatred for other people's lives.
Putting an "if" in your apology to someone is like hocking a loogie in their trick-or-treat bag. It ruins all the goodies and should justify your disqualification from being a member of society.
I bet people were spitting on her in the street.
Besides being 1) homophobic the article was a perfect example of irresponsible journalism. She had no proof for any of her insinuations. There have been plenty of cases where I live where a young person, the children of prominent members of law enforcement, have died of so-called natural causes and I've been suspicious. Especially since I knew for a fact that two of the people were crack addicts AND that there was bad batch of product in the town.
However, I've also known at least 2 people who've dropped dead in their twenties from a congenital heart defect. That's why a responsible journalist would report the FACTS of the case and you know, maybe investigate, rather than, make slimy accusations couched in a homophobic wrapper.
Aren't British laws on libel much more stringent than they are in the U.S. ? I am not sue-happy, but somebody should go after her and the Daily Mail.
"Obviously, a great deal of offence has been taken and I regret any affront caused. This was never my intention... I am not - unlike those close to Stephen Gately - mourning for the loss of a much-loved partner, son, family member, and close friend."
No, no, and no on all accounts. You'd have to be brain-dead dumb to think that something like that article wouldn't cause any harm. I fucking hate it when journalists and writers issue apologies with that thrown in. It's total bullshit.
And NO Jan you are NOT mourning him. A person mourning anyone they loved would have known better than to publish that shit at all. Close to the funeral, a year after it, it doesn't matter. That article reeked of bigotry and narrow-mindedness. And someone that loved and respected Mr. Gately would have understood that. #janmoir
Here is some good news. His label has also made a complaint against her. Now only for the family to do it. Also the PCC has now received over 25,000 complaints. [news.sky.com]#janmoir
@hortense: Ha, I made that apology myself yesterday. But in my defense, the person really WAS angry over something ridiculous. Unlike in this case. This woman's just terrible. #janmoir
@colormeroutine: Yes, there are definitely times when it's appropriate. Like when you're roommate gets upset that you asked her to stop stealing your stuff and since she never listened you resorted to yelling.
But this? Not one of those times. In fact in Muir's case, it's incredibly condescending. Like we're not supposed to be upset, but she's apologizing because we worked ourselves up into it. #janmoir
