@steveholtsmother: To be fair, 16 Candles is hardly an accurate representation of growing up -- it's really a John Hughes fairytale. But it's also a movie from the perspective of an adolescent girl that guys and girls both enjoy.

Movies like this always make me uncomfortable since I moved when I was 9 to a different state and lost all of my childhood friends, then come middle school my group of friends turned into assholes and I drifted for a while with absolutely no friends, then everyone I made as friends in high school I completely lost touch with come graduation/going to college/having a shitty, controlling boyfriend and even the few girls I had as close friends in college we got into a fight before finishing our degrees. Closest I have to a female friend I've known for just a couple years now and I know her through my boyfriend. Most all of my friends are guys and I grew up hanging out with my brother and his friends.

So I can't relate to happy girls as friends coming of age movies and generally avoid them.

@gluecake: I know how you feel, I also lack female friends. The closest thing I get to other ladies point of view is this site! Which I guess is better than nothing. So yeah, the movies don't do much for me.

This movie didn't reflect my experiences, but the experiences of many of the friends I would meet at college. It opened my eyes to a world I didn't really know existed... 5 minutes away from my house.

When I was about 12, my mom gave me a copy of Marjorie Morningstar. I always think of it as my coming of age book. Yes, it was set in the 30s and written in the 50s, but there's a lot in there about teens and 20s that still resonates, as well as choosing a career versus the role society wants you to play. I can quote entire scenes in that book.

My closest friends and I would watch Now and Then all the time (there were 4 of us, and we didn't totally fit the types, but it worked for us). It really is one of those movies that defined that time in our lives as we were growing up, and I really think it is similar to Stand By Me or The Goonies for a lot of boys.

Later, the four mix had changed one member, but we would watch Sex and the City, and we all could relate to a type. Maybe we just play into the stereotypes? But I really don't care, I love those memories.

Yeah its a total "chick flick" but Beaches sort of addresses the whole childhood friend to weird adult relationship thing.

My best friend up until about 16 and I were obsessed with Bette Midler films...

If you haven't seen Outrageous Fortune...Netflix it now.

Bette Midler, Shelley Long AND George Carlin? How can you go wrong! This movie is so underrated, no one has seen it!

Heathers is my coming of age story. Who among us didn't have their own Heathers to contend with? "Friends" we hated and emulated in equal measure? Who didn't have clueless parents and hook up with an ill-advised boyfriend? Who didn't kill two football players and then frame them as having killed themselves in a repressed homosexual suicide pact?....eh, I've said too much. But yeah, Heathers.

(Sorry, I had to. It's Pavlovian in me, whenever someone mentions Heathers. I watched this movie 16 times in a row, the first time I ever saw it in 8th grade.)

@Your Screenplay Sucks: I LOVE LOVE Heathers. I didn't necessarily identify with it, but its an amazing movie.

I was more Winona in Beetlejuice than in Heathers in high school.

I have 2 friends named Heather that I've been regularly hanging out with at the same time for about 10 years. And yet, saying, "No Heather, it's Heathers turn!" and "What's your damage, Heather?" never gets old and cracks me up every time.

"Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?" is for everyone else.

I think I still have the first 30 minutes of this movie memorized.

A lot of people hated it when it came out recently, but I think the movie Towelhead most accurately describes what my early adolescence felt like, in a squicky, adults-only, R-rated sense. I'd be curious if anyone else has seen it and what they thought of it.

Not sure if it counts, but I've always adored "The Hairy Bird" aka "Strike!" aka "All I Wanna Do". It's more about transitioning to adulthood, but the girls felt more real to me than the female characters of most teen comedy fare.

Does anyone else get jealous of other people's nostalgia? Like I remember being 12, but I don't really remember it as being a terribly important part of my life really. I think i have no real memory of "coming-of-age". I remember being a kid, like up to age 10 or so, and the kind of things I did, mostly with my brother. And I remember being a teenager, like from 14 onwards, but those in between years I remember just kinda sucking. Age 12 kinda sucked in general, too old to be a kid, too young to be a woman (thanks britney!) I just went to school, watched Snick on saturday nights, did mad libs on the phone and yeah I had sleepovers and hung-out with my friends, but there were no pivotal moments that remain seared in my brain, no deep conversations about who we were and what it meant. I've always loved Stand By Me, but I always watch it with a feeling of envy over this bond they had, and also felt guilt when the writer at the end says his line about not having friends like the one's when we were 12. I missed out! Why didn't anyone tell me I was meant to be having meaningful conversations?!

@chancentrate: I get jealous of other people's good nostalgia. I was the bully victim, and memories of being 11-16 are so painful that I dread having a daughter. All of my good memories of being that age come from wonderful books and movies, or being alone with my own imagination. My writing. Never from relationships. I haven't thrown away any diaries or writing from that stage, but I know I will never, ever read them.

I nominate Me Without You. Sure it's a movie that's mostly about these two British college-aged girls and the drama in their lives (and arguably their destructive relationship), but they are friends from childhood, and they struggle with that idea of how they plan to keep each other involved in their lives, as they grow up and realize that their hopes and dreams change somewhat. Plus I think Michelle Williams is great in it. I think it's worth a look (even if the last scene kind is a bit much for me).
