Here in the STL, we have an extraordinary place called the Butterfly House: thousands upon thousands of butterflies in a beautiful structure that is kept at sub-tropical climate year round. Also, for some reason that both eludes and charms me, the B-House is home to oodles of tiny fat quail. They skitter around, and sometimes the butterflies land on them, but it ain't no thang. When you leave, there are floor-to-ceiling mirrors, so you can check to make sure you're not taking a Monarch home in your hair.
I DESPISE BUTTERFLIES. They give me the serious wig. They're the squirrels of the insect world - like, squirrels are just 'pretty' rodents, butterflies are 'pretty' BUGS. I do not like their deceptive practices. I like my rodents and bugs ugly and yucky.
@lolowyo...wants a zombie baby: Say what you will about bugs, madam, but DO NOT DARE disparage the noble squirrel. I LOVE squirrels. They are, to me, little tree-dwelling kittens. So I advise you to mind your tongue on that subject, or me and Squirrelcop will be obligated to dole out a whuppin'. Or at least a citation, bearing our official crest. (see my avatar.) Thank you for your cooperation:)
Every autumn in my city there's a butterfly show at a university greenhouse. It is so fucking awesome. Totally breathtaking.
Really it's a shame that her eyes are closed in this picture... every person I've seen who's had a butterfly land on them is lit up like the sun, beaming as if they've been spontaneously blessed by the highest divine authority. Like I said, awesome.
I really like that girl's haircut. A lot. And it's wrong of me, I know, but I'd like one of those butterflies to wear in my hair. It's wrong because obviously the butterfly would have to be dead or it just wouldn't work.
I like the one they have at The Bronx Zoo. Haven't been there in a couple of years, but my daughter thought it was the neatest thing in the world when she was 2.
In all seriousness, my grandmother was a fanatic about butterflies. At her funeral, this butterfly followed my mother around incessantly. We imagined it was her. Later, while studying Nabokov, who was a lepidopterist,in college I learned that her name, Thecla, is a kind of butterfly. I've had a soft spot for them ever since. Every time I see one, I think of her.
@EkaterinaBallerina: That is so wonderful. Thank you for sharing that story. I feel my mother's presence sometimes, (she's been gone for 15 years), and it's just lovely.
@Schez: Oh, she'd love to hear someone say that! It was her middle name actually but since she was named after her mom, she went by it. She was always iffy about it.
@ItchykooParker: Aww. My feelings on religion are spotty, but the one thing I know I believe in is my grandmother's presence in my life. If I ever feel like I need something, I always know she's there.
Ok, no. Butterfly Houses are freaking TERRIFYING. A million flappy, jittery flying creatures getting all up in your hair and under your clothes. Just no.
Also, every time I've been to one, I end up killing a few, moths especially, trying frantically to get them out of my hair. Those places are bad news!
@Pocahaunted (formerly CocoBambi): I feel the same way. My parents took me to a butterfly house once and one landed on me and it took all of my strength not to swat it. If I were the girl in the picture, I'd probably be screaming. But a sort of muffled, constrained screaming, so it wouldn't fly in my mouth. Just because it has pretty wings doesn't mean it's not a GIANT FUCKING BUG ON MY FACE.
@saintbernadette: To be fair, I get freaked out when butterflies try to land on me. Sure, they're pretty from afar, but up close, they are still insects! I realized this at about the age of 12 and haven't been the same since regarding beautifully-winged bugs.
@saintbernadette: Well, thanks for ruining it! Great job! Horrible, awful images sprang to mind immediately and made me cower, a little. Like an elephant moth from Silence of the Lambs, for example.

Number 2: yes.
Number 3: OMG SQUEE!!!
Number 5: of course.
That's it for me. Everything else scores pretty high on the Meh scale.

Sometimes people have the most appropriate names. My mum who is awesome with plants is called Laura and her last name translates as Rosemary.
Another story I like involving animals and funeral is when Emily Bronte died, her dog was heading her funeral procession.
