That being said, I'm waiting for the Real Sports profile by Frank DeFord or Andrea Kramer.

Take, for instance, Adam Morrison. For a couple of years, every single time he made a shot, the announcer would say, "Adam Morrison, who has diabetes, just sank a three!" And SI ran a multi-page article basically about how Adam Morrison has diabetes.
They have to have an angle.

In high school, I ran track with a Muslim girl who not only did our summer 90+ degree 2 mile runs, but also didn't slow down the entire month of Ramadan. I admired her so much for her dedication to her religion, and her commitment that that wouldn't slow her from doing anything else she wanted in her life.

I do worry about the image of Muslims that is presented in the UK and US at present... there doesn't appear to be a great deal of balance and effort to normalise it, so articles like this feel like a small dent in a huge amount of negative coverage to me.

My fiancé's job involves monitoring all of Discovery's networks (Discovery, Science, Health, Animal Planet, TLC, and so on)... 8 hours at a time. He comes home happy when he's been on BBC America or Travel (which aren't Discovery, but go through the same facility) but comes home angry on TLC nights or faintly green on Discovery Health ones.

And I think if there was a Sikh player who wore a turban, that would get a LOT of press.

It was not too long ago that here in Minnesota that the opposing team threw bagles on the ice while playing a team from a town that was predominantly Jewish.

Sports media makes its living by othering everyone, and othering isn't necessarily pejorative all the time. In this case, while the article dwelled quite a bit on her religion, I didn't think that it was excessive or close-minded. Plus, I am in favor of almost all increased women's sports coverage, so if it takes four paragraphs on the influence of her religion, I'll accept that. I mean,it's not like they spent four paragraphs talking about her outfit or her body.
