"O RLY? More violent than boxing? Or MMA? Or does it only seem violent and newsworthy because women are involved, and they're not acting like delicate princesses?"
Yeah, rly. Pugilistic or MMA violence is of the expected variety: Both parties know it's coming.
This violence was, in my mind, of a significantly higher order, involving true victimization.
Seriously—any skiing/snowboarding Jezzies care to recommend a good place for a first skiing experience? I'd love to try a ski vacation, but I have no idea where to go. I grew up in the Southeast U.S., and I've always heard that the skiing in NC/VA/WV is kinda sucky...but "real" ski resorts seem like they might be overwhelming for a newbie like me.
@Kivrin: Well, I learned in Ruidoso, NM, which is within driving distance of the place where I grew up, and I still go every now and then to ski with my parents or with old friends from my hometown. It's more reasonably priced than others ski resorts and I don't think you'd feel as overwhelmed in terms of people in attendance. #torahjanebright
@Kivrin: East Coast girls like Hunter Mountain and the Poconos.
(Although, even at Aspen, you can always stay indoors - and if you take Pilates class with the rest of the skiers, no one even laughs.) #torahjanebright
@Kivrin: I live in Utah and I highly recommend just about anyplace here. The conditions are great, the costs aren't as high as other "destination" skiing areas, and really great instructors abound if you are interested in taking a class (which I recommend, it can make a drastic difference). That said, I grew up on the west coast and learned to ski in WA/OR, so I'd say from experience that most places in these states are fine as well, and I would assume most places in CA are similar. I learned to snowboard on the east coast and would advise against most east coast locations, with the possible exception of VT/NH which are supposed to be really nice. You definitely don't need powder or any such thing when you're first learning, but if the snow is crusty/icy/packed down too much (as is more often the case out east) then it will be more difficult to learn and possibly turn you off of skiing altogether.
The other thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the big resorts offer beginner's packages these days, which include gear rental and lift tickets for just the beginners/smaller lifts. These are often much more reasonably priced than the lift tickets for the whole mountain, so you won't feel like you're wasting your money on something you can't really use yet anyway. #torahjanebright
As you may have guessed, the athletics department here at UNM is feeling a bit of heat. First our football coach punched an assistant coach. Then the football team managed to maintain a perfect record of 0-7. Now Ms. Lambert.
This was a fabulous week for our president to announce a renewed commitment to athletics. #elizabethlambert
@la.donna.pietra: Considering that the legislature and King Bill have joined together in threatening to slash 5% of the budget, I can't think of any place better to start.I am not proud to be a Lobo today, New Mexico. #elizabethlambert

Soccer is definitely a violent sport, and the bad behavior is certainly not limited to women (anyone remember Wayne Rooney's "testicle stomping" last World Cup?). However, in my experience women are far more likely to use violence and cheating as a way to advance.
I was on a soccer team by the time I was five, and played co-ed and girls league soccer until college. Guys could definitely be violent, but the majority of the blatant, calculating violence was done by women.
My soccer career quickly ended because one game, a girl purposely stepped on my foot and didn't get up as I fell, literally snapping my ankle. She immediately started fake crying and got a foul called on me. So, yeah. Kind of bitter. Although I'm still a hell of a lot luckier than another teammate, who got her spine broken when a girl kicked her in the back when was on the ground. Compared to that, the ponytail grab doesn't look so bad! #elizabethlambert
I have been yellow carded for accidentally stepping on someone's foot and she pulls that shit and stays in the game? The refs must have been blind. #elizabethlambert
@EkaterinaBallerina: I my mind it's all related to sexism. Most refs refused to believe pretty girls are agressive and/or can be violent. It's one of the reasons I think we need more women referees. And why I ref. #elizabethlambert
@EkaterinaBallerina: my worst attack was when a defender (bigger than me and quite muscular/strong) sat on my head on an astroturf field. 1. i was stuck under her and 2. the turf really hurt and scratched up my face pretty badly.
I also got hit in the face, right in the nose, with someone's wrist cast once. that could have been an accident but why did they let her play? it was dangerous. #elizabethlambert
@unionmaid: Wow good for you reffing. That's great and I totally agree.
We also believed that the refs were so slow to act because of the school we were playing. I won't say the name, but it specialized in students with emotional problems. Students that were already aggressive, angry and violent. Which throw in competitive sports and it's a pretty ugly few hours. In the 4 years I had to play them, I saw some of the worst behavior I've ever seen and it was rarely called or punished. Of all games to up the whistle-blowing, this would have been the one. But alas, the refs spent the whole time looking bored off their brains. #elizabethlambert
The hair pull down is the about the same as the sucker punch made by LaGarrett Blount of Oregon, which was national news for about a week after the fact. It will be interesting to see if the seriousness of Lambert's actions will diminish with time so that she might get reinstated, as it seems Blount will be let back on the team. #elizabethlambert
@nancydrewme: That's interesting. I made the same connection in my mind to that Oregon Boise State game. Both were sucker moves, egregious #elizabethlambert
@nancydrewme: The difference is that the other soccer player wasn't taunting Lambert. The Boise State player was being a rude, aggressive jerk to Blount. (Not saying he deserved to get punched, but he shouldn't have acted the way he did.) #elizabethlambert
@nancydrewme: both guys deserve some blame in that situation. blount clearly shouldnt have punched #94, but #94 definately provoked blount.
#94 didnt need to say anything to blount, he went out of his way to specifically say something to him. frankly, he got what he deserved, they [boise state] won and he felt the need to rub it in his face. if someone is going to talk shit, they really shouldnt cry about it when they get punched for running their mouth. #elizabethlambert
@la.donna.pietra: Yeah, I agree. He was clearly saying something to him. The Boise State coach was trying to restrain him. I just take every opportunity I can to hate on Oregon football, I can't help it. #elizabethlambert
A lot of that was way over agressive play, but the ponytail pull was ridiculous and should have gotten her thrown out of the game (I don't have the sound on, so I don't know if she was, but they didn't show video of the red card). All of that shit would get you at least a 15 yard penalty in football, where despite all the hitting, they do not take that stuff lightly. #elizabethlambert
Reminds me of when my ballet teacher told me I should wear my hair up in a pony tail to ballet class. The next class, she pulled me back to the right spot with my pony tail. #elizabethlambert

Radar must not have seen the 2006 World Cup where Zidane (one of my fave players!) head-butted 2006 World Cup.
I won't even itemize on Wayne Rooney! #elizabethlambert
