I cannot remember any of my dinner ladies being so cheerful when I was at school. And far from mushroom rissotto and morning glory muffins, I got cold lumpy mashed potatoes and semolina and jam and woe betide you if you didn't eat it all up. Ah happy days!
I have a tear in my eye, because if I ever became First Lady my big issue would totally be about getting fresh, wholesome and good food to everyone, starting with food banks and soup kitchens. You rock on Michelle! Even though I already have a large ladycrush on you, I believe my heart has grown two sizes today.
@encnyc: No, no grinchiness here! I was trying to infer that my heart/crush swelled even more after seeing that image, but I did it wrong. I've always donated to food banks, but she inspired me to contact a local soup kitchen to volunteer and serve/help out. 'Tis all.
@bellethellama: I think encync was just referring to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, where the Grinch's heart is "two sizes too small" and later swells up at the end. I don't think anyone thought you were saying anything other than that your heart swelled over this picture. :)
This picture inspires me to donate to America's Second Harvest again. It also makes me tear up in a happy way. I love the Obamas so much it is just ridiculous.
My brother-in-law is the Exec. Director at Miriam's! It was a secret leading up to it, but he got to meet privately with her, and his wife also got to meet her. She was friendly and kind to all the guests, she scooped risotto like any other volunteer. DC Jezzies, if you're looking for somewhere to volunteer, try Miriam's, they are an amazing place.
I'm so proud and jealous of my brother-in-law, it's been the buzz of the entire family all day.

@LadyNo Fondles Sweaters: I loved that article but damn, did anyone read those comments? They were so hateful! Most of them called it a publicity stunt, like, god forbid the First Lady actually use her high profile to call public attention to things that matter, you know, like hunger and poverty. Geez louise, some people will find anything to crab about the Obamas. I don't recall Barbara or Laura Bush serving food to homeless people and mixing with the proles.
@bloodflower: They always have an awesome menu there, the Executive Chef comes from a fine dining background. I follow their twitter and they post the menu every day and I get all hungry!
