The first summer we were dating, we spent an inordinate portion of our non-working hours lying around on a mattress on the floor of my shitty basement apartment listening to Jonathan Richman. It melted the heck outta my heart when he sang "When She Started to Ride" and "Everyday Clothes." Right before we started dating, he seduced me by playing Third Eye Blind and other 90s staples on an acoustic guitar. I know, I'm easy.
Right now, though, he's shouting "Gucci you 'ont loove me!" at me. Funny how things change in 3 years.
so very very late to the party but I had to contribute. haven't really thought about a full-on soundtrack for my current relationship, but this song would probably be playing right now.
Boyfriend and I do not have similar taste in music. So. I don't really think we have a relationship soundtrack-- there are a few songs he says remind him of me, but we don't really bond over music, or listen to it together unless we're in the car.
I can describe every relationship I've ever had with a Fiona Apple song. Perfectly. Different songs each time. The current sort of thing I'm in is either Extraordinary Machine or Waltz (Better than fine). Or both.
The BFs and I's soundtrack would be the entire soundtracks to the Buffy musical episode and Dr.Horrible. I wonder what the LA Times would make of that!
@redqueenmeg: I had a friend use "The Sweetest Thing" as a wedding song last year, which I'm pretty sure is about breaking up. Maybe best to just avoid U2!
Seriously. It's the song we first talked about when we met (and agreed we'd sing it karaoke-style together some day).. and some day came about a year later when we sang it at some crappy hotel bar in Ohio with my family watching (and getting us drunk so we'd actually do it). Ahh memories.
Also on the soundtrack: Aaron's Party by Aaron Carter, Africa by Toto, Love is Gone by David Guetta, and Walking on Broken Glass by Annie Lennox.
There is the sountrack to the relationship and the soundtrack of the relationship's demise. Sometimes they overlap, which provides for intense moments of reflection and crying in your car while muttering "youfuckeryouruinedthatsongform...."

We... don't take music too seriously, apparently.
