In reply to "Too Brash, Too Forceful, Or Too Flirty": 2,000 Years Of Dangerous Women
Remember when Jerry Falwell accused we witches of causing the terror attacks on 9/11?

And then strangely Ann Coulter called the 9/11 widows "witches"?

Clearly the only thing lacking here is that they have not been able to motivate unruly mobs to take action.

I've read studies that compared the economic topography of the Salem account's victims and accusers. The vast majority of those accused were agriculturally based, including midwives and herbologists, and the accusers were mostly from the newer settled areas of town, those of the factory/mercantile/merchants persuasion. Add to this religious motivations, and it casts a more capricious view of those that would seek to stifle the voice of those they do not understand.

There's also a book called The Devil in the Shape of a Woman about witchcraft accusations in New England. One motivation to accuse people, especially women who owned their own property, of witchcraft is that if they were convicted, you got their stuff. So let's say Widow Jones owns the adjacent hectare that's more fertile than yours. Suddenly your cow goes dry and you maintain along with some interested parties that you saw her hex your cow. Widow Jones goes to the gallows and you've doubled the size of your landholdings.

Today's witchhunts/witchcraft-accusations are modern psychiatry, in which women are the vast receivers of diagnoses. At least in the Western world.

In Amazonia/Africa, witchcraft and sorcery is still alive and well. The integration of modern medicinal practices into it is kinda nifty.

@Dauphine: Your must know my old clinical supervisor who diagnosed every woman that walked through his door as "Borderline Personality Disorder".

My fave was this situation where a kid was acting out right after his father packed his suitcase in front of him one night and said "I'm leaving and I'm never coming back, so this is goodbye, son". My supervisor's verdict? The kid's mom had BPD.

True fact. All that burning & hanging happened west of the 1054 divide. And that's what the texts on the matter are not telling anyone.

I took a class called "History of Early Modern Europe" that was about witch hunts and demon posessions. Pretty much anyone who was "other" was categorized as a witch and cast out of the village. This was more prevalent among peasants (who were the majority of the population anyway). For example, homosexuals, Jews, and Gypsies were all witches, right off the bat, but then again so were unusually smart women & men, anyone who spoke ill about someone who just happened to become sick soon afterwards, and honestly, if you wanted to get back at someone for stealing your potato - just call them a witch and you'd be rid of them forever.

If you'd like I'll post the titles of the books I used in class - I still have them because they really are SO entertaining.

And as a P.S. the writers of The Exorcist studied their history because I read an account of a demon posession from pre-reformation Germany that was word-for-word exactly the same as the posession of the little girl in the movie.

While 1945 may be the last year there was a witch hunt in Europe, there are certainly ongoing attacks on witches throughout the world. I know that it's still a major element of political and social life in South Africa. I realize South African witchcraft and accusations of witchcraft are different from British and European ones, but, it's still interesting.

@pinkhungryhippo: I don't see them as being different. In Europe people tend not to blame their bad luck on "witchcraft" any more, so they don't kill "witches". They have in modern times blamed other groups instead like the Jews and Gypsies, etc.

"Witches" as witches are still part of other cultural groups, though, as you've pointed out in Africa and in Navajo culture some harm is still attributed to witchcraft.

Are homosexuals the new witch? Seems like a lot of people attribute powers to them...turning kids gay (and who knows what all else), ruining marriage, having magical decorating powers...

And there's this obsession with figuring out who is gay and who isn't. Anderson Cooper, for example.

    I don't know. Just a thought.
