    @the_decider needs the Lazzaroni Amaretti di Saronno cookie ...: You know, in theory I am in agreement with them. Chemical castration of everyone as soon as they are born. When they want kids, go through classes and prove you're capable and can take care of the kid and it starts all over.


    Like I said, in theory its great, but in practice it would never work and would be abused to all hell. Still, it would be nice to envision a world where people only have children because they want to have them and have the means mentally and monetarily to take care of them. Ah, well.

    @dee_ess_dee_1: Ha, it's probably bad, but at the same time it's so hard to understand why someone would do this that I think it's natural to look for an explanation. Just go to YouTube, look at the comments under some of the videos, and realize that these people probably have more intelligence and morals than the woman who did this. Why, yesss I would like to be a prosecutor some day...

    What perplexes me is that the Times article refers to a wider trade between Belgian mothers and Dutch parents, in children. How does this *work*? How do the purchaser parents explain that a kid just appeared to their family/friends/the government?

    @irkutskaya: "Adoption" But often it's not very different from American parents paying for health care and shit for a surrogate, or paying gigantic fees to adoption agencies.

    Parents will also pay thousands of euros to adopt from China. In the end, is there really that much of a difference?


    (Full disclosure: I believe all adoption worldwide should be strictly regulated and completely uniform, exactly to prevent shit like this)

    @mondon: I think the reporter originally put that in there to show that she has had children in the past with another man without this shady type of stuff happening- her new boyfriend seems to imply that she never had money problems or body image issues until the most recent husband came along.

    @Your Screenplay Sucks: I kinda see were Belgium is coming from. I think they never made it illegal because it didn't occur to anyone that any parent would do that, plus it's maybe something that happens so rarely (I hope) that making it a law, enforcing it wasn't @ the top of the govt.'s list. I'm sure there are lots of horrible things that could happen here in the US that aren't illegal yet because nobody has thought to make them illegal.

    @hortense: I don't know, the purpose of most child welfare laws is to protect the children and I think they may be better off elsewhere than with nutters like these as parents. I don't think it's trafficking per se unless it's part of some on-going for-profit scheme.

    @StudFemme In Three-Inch Peep-Toe Pumps: Yes, I imagine that most lawmakers, who tend towards only slight sociopathy, never imagined such a law would be necessary. For example, it would never occur to me that anyone would imprison his daughter in a basement for 15 years and make her give birth to his children, but apparently I was wrong on that score.


    I think this all proves that when drafting laws, it cannot hurt to overestimate humankind's potential for depravity.

    @Sophie needs to study...but isn't: I know! You'd think being WHITE and MALE would mean higher prices. Plus, there's two of them! If that's the going rate for two white baby boys, I guess that means that one brown female baby would go for about 3-5 grand (estimate based on current trends, racism, sexism, exhange rate, etc.) Wow... talk about a bargain...

    @Eaten not Slurped: They're not very good at it though, she totally low balled herself. 9 months is ~270 at 24 hours per day that's 6480 hours for $13,000 or ~$2 per hour. and that's assuming that they were sold as soon as they were born and there was no medical expenses incurred during the pregnancy.
