I feel my age is showing, but I can't possibly fathom hiring anyone to decorate my home or tell me how to dress. Hell, I can't even hire someone to clean once a week because I'm afraid they'll think I'm a slob.

But seriously, hire someone to 'style' your music for you? To me that's the same as hiring someone to buy books for your place based on the color/age/material of the bindings and how they accent your decor. Totally without thought or soul and the very definition of lazy. Want to discover new music? Browse iTunes! Like what you've got and want a mix to play for your dinner party? Sit in the room, decide on the mood, think of who you're inviting then get to your computer and go to work. Or do it the quickie way and use Genius.

Holy cats, what's next? Professional ass-pickers?

@Gretchen: Oh, and get a grip on reality you rich-and-hung-up-on-perfection folk. Its background music people, not rocket science.

/rant. Gretchen is crabby from dealing with hyper kids today whilst hung over. My next project for the evening will be to start a grass roots movement to push my state legislators to pass a law banning the sale of energy drinks to anyone under the age of 18. Because dealing with 50 HS students at 8 am who are hyper from chugging 2 Monsters on the way to school needs to be dealt with. Being in that situation should be FUCKING AGAINST THE LAW.

....Oh, Moses in a basket there I go again.

This would be cool if it benefited the artists/labels supplying the music. It seems doubtful that these lifestyle service providers or their clients are paying what they should to ASCAP. Since the smug little music experts don't charge on a per track basis, it seems kind of illegal.

@SergeKinkapoo: They don't have to. If all of the music is legally purchased by the client, that person can hire anyone they want to mix it for their personal use. However, it would be illegal for the 'music expert' to provide mixes for the clients without those clients purchasing the music or paying the proper royalties.

I have original, old Flying Nun posters everywhere in my room (courtesy of a family friend as equally obsessed as I), old gig tickets, cds overflowing from my bookcase and stacked up against my wall, and a large mural across my cork board saying 'Party & Bullshit'. If you couldn't figure out my music taste from my room, what do I care? I already know who I am, and I don't need to pay someone to tell me!

@ASmallTurnip is joyful today.: Dude, you know it! I was there when it was too rough for a wee girl like me to be there! And I'm a massive Verlaines fan. I used to love the Clean, but we went to see them when they reunited, and it was disenchanting, to say the least. I know they aren't FN, but I love Cut Off Your Hands and So So Modern; I think they're actually in your neck of the woods at the moment!

I know iPod Stylists have been around for at least 4 years and at first I thought it was ridiculous until just recently I realised I had 8,000 songs in my iTunes and no real talent at being able to put the music into working playlists that sound good.

Luckily Apple came to save the day with Genius for iTunes which certainly makes life alot easier although a large part of me dislikes using it because it makes me feel like a cop out.

Why can't I just come up with great playlists by myself? This truely is a special talent. If I could think of one person to put together my playlists based on their movie soundtracks... I'd pick Sofia Coppola.

Personal music stylist? EXACTLY what we need in this economy! Right?

I do this shit by myself, dudes, and I am a prole. Whenever I'm walking through the city and I'm bopping along to my iPod, I constantly flick around to find the songs I really like, and I sort of dance down the street pretending that I am a superhero or something.

It is very serious business.
