    I enjoy the non-celebrity SJ's as a rule, but this feels meanspirited. Why use the most unflattering possible picture of a person who will likely never have her picture in an international forum again? And of a girl under 17? Do we not remember how traumatizing even a bad yearbook photo was at that age?

    @yvanehtnioj: Meanspirited? Hmm. Most the photos of athletes present them mid-movement and exerting large amounts of effort - or what you describe as" unflattering". "Meanspirited" was not how it was meant.

    27 y/o me agrees with you. But 15 y/o me would have gone home thrilled with her wins but locked herself in her room to cry when she got this link in an email.

    @Anna: Unflattering + noncelebrity teenager = meanspirited, was my reasoning.

    An unflattering picture of a celebrity, a model falling on a runway: these are kind of "takedowns" that seem funny. A picture of a relatively anonymous teenage girl looking exceptionally awkward seems mean to me.

    @yvanehtnioj: I agree with you on this. I'm sure it wasn't meant in a malicious way, but there's no way this girl would be getting Gawker coverage if she weren't caught in such and awkward pose.

    Regardless, we can all recognize her accomplishment and applaud her for it. And now, for your viewing pleasure, a discus throwing dude looking like a tool :)

    @yvanehtnioj: This wasn't a "takedown". Also, this young woman is at a championship sports event featuring the top teen athletes in her country, leading me to believe that she's been competing (and been photographed) in public for a fair amount of time. I think perhaps that you're not giving her enough credit.

    @yvanehtnioj: As a former high school track and cross-country runner, I was photographed making all sorts of unpleasant faces. I personally enjoyed the pictures because they were of me doing what I loved, but would also cringe whenever anyone else saw them. That's what I thought of when I saw this. She's probably thinking, "Why did they have to go with THAT picture?"

    @Anna: I know it wasn't a takedown, per se. It's an unflattering picture. When there's an unflattering picture of people who are universally acknowledged as gorgeous, that's a takedown. When there's an unflattering picture of anonymous teenagers, it feels mean.

    If not giving her enough credit means being overly concerned about hurting her feelings, I'm okay with that. It would have hurt my feelings when I was a teenager. I do understand that posting this picture wasn't meant in a malicious way. My comment was merely to convey exactly what I said: it makes me uncomfortable to choose unflattering pictures of noncelebrities to feature in an international forum, particularly if they're teenagers.

    @AmbiguouslyStraightUno: sports photographs are not glamor shots. sorry, but there are plenty of photographs that go up on this site of people who *might* not find them flattering but are interesting nonetheless because of time, place, emotion, dynamism on display, aesthetics, and a whole host of other things that catch my eye.

    -Half the voting age people from Bolivia live abroad.
    -1.5 million Bolivians live in the city of Buenos Aires (they had to use a football stadium as voting venue)
    -Many of the people voting here yesterday couldn't read or write.
