Y'know what Senator Kyl? Your prostate issues, coronary bypass, diabetes, gout, cancer and erectile dysfunction will probably cost your insurer more money than any pregnancy I might have, so maybe insurers shouldn't cover those things either.
(P.S. As far as I know Senator Kyl doesn't have any of those diseases/problems, I just tried to think of old dude medical problems.)

A worth while health care bill will not get passed in the Senate, these maybe our elected officials but they do not work for us. Our Senators ran for Senate not to help they're constituents but to help themselves, public service isn't what it used to be. John Kyl says that he doesn't need maternity care therefore it is unnecessary, the bottom line is he has great health insurance and he can't relate to the less fortunate, and never plans to. This is not a democracy for the people anymore, it is capitalism at it's most fine tuned.

An abortion is so much cheaper than maternity care, not to mention the care for the child. Kids are clumsy and stupid, they get hurt all the time, not to mention all those childhood diseases they get. So those opposed to universal health care because they don't want to pay, should therefore support abortions? You know, from a fiscal point of view.

I went to his senate website to tear him a new one. Noticed he has 2 adult children and 4 grandchildren. I guess he's saying his wife, daughter and daughter-in-law should have had to pay the thousands of dollars out of pocket for those deliveries! And the King Douche award goes to Jon Kyl!

BTW, their defense is that he's "not a misogynist" he was just trying to "control costs." Ugh.

According to his reasoning, then, I vote that insurance plans should no longer be required to provide prostate screenings, treatment for testicular cancer, or erectile dysfunction treatment, because you know we women make up over 50% of the population and are NEVER need that.

This reminds me of when John McCain explained that it was OK for insurers to being forced by statute to cover Viagra, but not birth control, because the need for birth control is due to a woman's "lifestyle choice", while Viagra treats a medical condition. Because, you know every man has a RIGHT to an erection, but if women don't want to be burdened by 15 or so children, they should CHOOSE to keep their legs shut.

I don't understand this argument at all. Sure, he doesn't need it, and maybe he doesn't have kids either. But surely not all conservative men can feel this way, since whether or not they pay for maternity care in their insurance premiums, they'll end up paying for it if their wives/girlfriends have their children. And I would argue that the majority of people end up having children. So, pay for it through healthcare or pay for it out of pocket, but it's not going away, and it's not going to fall solely on women's shoulders, either.

@rixatrix: Right. Rich people, the people who SHOULD be reproducing will still be able to afford to pay for maternity care, so this Senator doesn't see any issue. Because poor, uninsured people are poor because they have not worked hard enough to become rich. Becoming rich is very easy if you aren't lazy! Anyone can become rich if they try hard enough! Which is why most conservatives are rich. But of course, those conservatives who are poor, are only poor because of the *other* poor, LAZY people bringing them down. They'd have tons of money if the librul government wasn't giving their money to the other poors. And those other poors don't deserve maternity care, because they are lazy.

And healthcare reform has nothing to do with helping poor, lazy people. It is all about cutting costs. Unless they are elderly, poor, lazy people. Don't pull the plug on Granny!!!

@Jessica Haas: I wrote Sen. Kyl a letter complaining that his views were very anti-choice, because they would force many women to have to get abortions, because they could not afford maternity care. And that's just so wrong. Women should be able to decide whether or not to keep a pregnancy based on many factors, and not just be forced to abort, because of the risks inherent with carrying a pregnancy to term, which requires some sort of care.

I've got an idea. Why don't we all just pay insurance premiums based on our actual health care needs? That way, the healthy people only have to pay the cost of preventive visits and sick people can go bankrupt just like if they didn't have insurance! Yippee!
