A very, very close second would be the Clash's "London Calling." It was my first introduction to old school punk and it initiated a lifelong love of that musical style which had a major impact on my adolescence.

When I was discovering my own music it was Nine Inch Nails, Propagandhi and Bad Religion.

A few albums that addicted me to music: DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing," Can's "Cannibalism 1," the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique" and my top 80's album, the Minutemen's "Double Nickels on the Dime."

The first album I bought with my own money, and not cribbed from my parents' taste, was the Stand By Me soundtrack. And for me, hells yeah it holds up.

I was 12, and she's still an inspiration.

After that throw in some radiohead, sam cooke, john zorn, bad brains, alison krauss, boyz II men and spoon and you've got only the tip of the iceberg that is my random musical taste.

In college, Dave Matthews Band made me truly appreciate music and not just lyrics...and then Radiohead finished the process of my obsession with music.

I am guessing no one has said Rimsky-Korsakov:Scheherazade
by Fritz Reiner
I currently love Rachid Taha Made in Medina which is a little out of date. Any suggestions in that North African style Jezebel?

If your friend gives you some recommendations from Tunisia, please PM me! I will pay you twenty camels.

Will they be drugged, smuggled camels, though? (Sorry. My father insisted on enlightening me about camel smuggling, which apparently involves feeding them weed as a narcotic.)
01/11/09
clean camels only

I played the English horn solo in that in Area All State Orchestra when I was 15. On my teacher's horn (those things are expensive, and my parents had just bought me an oboe b/c I was getting decent).
You couldn't have told me squat.
For weeks.

@squirrelcop: Ok I bow to you, you got me beat by a few years. I don't know when I discovered it but I wasn't 13.

First: Beatles, St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club
Second; Kinks, double album, live
then on my own:
Third: Vs.Mission of Burma
Fourth : Low, Eno/Bowie
Fourth: Raw Power, Stooges
Fifth: Fall, Perverted By language
Sixth: Jerry's Kids Is this my world?
And so on into billy bragg, Minutemen, pere ubu, led zep, radio birdman, patti smith, Volcano suns, Nick cave,
And when I got into them I mean INTO, I mean played every morning super LOUD smoking bong hits and soaking in the horror of being teenaged me.
Ah youth, Ah tinnitus.
