It's not easy to travel to Europe and see much in the way of women's history that doesn't involve nuns, torture, queens or housework. The New York Times did manage to find something — in Belgium. As explained in yesterday's Travel section, both during and after the crusades, women banded together under the auspices of the Catholic Church and founded béguinages, which offered them the chance to live independently with one another without committing to being nuns. There's more on this "oldest women's movement" here. [NY Times]

Williams Sisters Closer To Wimbledon Finals • Ignored Woman Dies On ER Floor In Brooklyn Hospital

The Williams sisters could both qualify for the Wimbledon final as they both reached the semifinals. • Missouri, the home of Megan Meier, has outlawed harassment via computers, text messages and other electronic devices. • A woman collapsed and was ignored by patients, doctors, and security guards as she died on the floor of an emergency room in Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. Absolutely disgusting behavior from these people. •"Divorce experts" report that a rocky marriage could have something to do with birth order/ believing ridiculous claims about divorce. • Protests of a teen girl's death in China have forced police to reopen the case and highlight the growing distrust of local officials by Chinese citizens. Remember when there used to be more than like 3 female rappers around? No? Well, our kind buddy Rich unearthed a 1991 pay-per-view special called Sisters in the Name of Rap that featured all the heavy-hitters of the day—YoYo, Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Roxanne Shante—(and a bunch of women I don't remember at all, some of whom showed up for the taping pregnant). He posted a bunch of the performances on his YouTube account, and wrote about how fucked up it is that there aren't many women in the rap game these days, and even when there were, male guest rappers often got louder applause from the audience. Fighting Off Wig-Stealing Drag Queens At 'Night Of A Thousand Stevies'

"Sometimes, the most beautiful thing, the most innocent thing — and many of those dreams — pass us by." Well, my friend Bennett Madison and I were determined not to let the 18th Annual "Night of A Thousand Stevies" (NOTS) pass us by, and if you recognize the quote above as a line from the (best) Stevie Nicks song (ever), "Angel," then you already understand why we were motivated to attend an event that brings Stevie Nicks impersonators from around the country to perform in front of an audience full of...Stevie Nicks impersonators. If you don't understand, read on: you just might learn something about one of the greatest artists of all time, and the bizarre, semi-sad, hilariously gay and nerdy and over-the-top cult that has sprung up around the singer. Kardashian Sisters Laugh In Kim's "Ugly Face"

On last night's episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the "civil war" raged on as the family went on a ski trip together, which only heightened tensions between Kim and her sisters. (This whole fight, if you remember, started over Kim buying a Bentley.) This time, the entire family seemed to be ganging up on Kim, reducing her to tears, which sister Kourtney ended up laughing in her face about, because she has "an ugly crying face." Clip above.

Is There Something Extra-Special -- And Extra-Stressful -- Between Sisters?

Much has been made about Margaret "Peggy" Seltzer, the writer whose gang violence memoir, Love and Consequences, turned out to be a fabrication. But, the New York Times asks today, what of Cyndi Hoffman, Peggy's older sister? Hoffman is the one who turned "tattletale" and blew the whistle on Peggy. Her own sister. "We have powerful expectations of loyalty from a sister," Marcia Millman, sociology professor and author of The Perfect Sister: What Draws Us Together, What Drives Us Apart tells the Times. "But along with the idealized image of sisters, that they are always close, there is a stereotype that sisters are very competitive. It's the two extremes." They say blood is thicker than water, but is the truth thicker than blood? More »

If You Have To Have A Stage Dad... Ginger and Robbi Howard, 13 and 12, respectively, are being groomed by their dad to be the Williams sisters of golf. Robert Howard introduced them to the sport in preschool one day when his wife asked him to baby-sit. "I had a video camera, and I filmed the girls so [their mother] would know I did something productive with them." They were good! Now Robert oversees their "Journey" to greatness, driving them to far-flung tournaments, chronicling their every triumph on a website, and attempting above all else to shelter them from the poisonous effects of non-Nickelodeon television programming. He would like to attract the rapper 50 Cent to be a benefactor of sorts. And while he is relentlessly positive, he does worry they won't grow tall enough to be competitive — both are hovering around 5 feet tall — though he notes with satisfaction that their feet are approaching a size ten. Isaac Mizrahi Joins The Big Gunn At Liz Claiborne

  • Isaac Mizrahi is defecting from Target to join Tim Gunn at Liz Claiborne. [Maybe they will post a YouTube video of themselves doing lunch at the company salad bar so Jennie can use it for porn! -Moe] This is supposed to be a big "blow" to Target, but Claiborne can use all the help it can get. • Keith Richards is the new face of Louis Vuitton. It was Marc's idea, of course. It's like post-post-sharkjumpism or something. [WWD, 1st item]
  • Designer Diane von Furstenberg on Hillary Clinton: "I support Hillary because I believe she will do the best job in the White House. I do know her a little and like her very much. She is intelligent, diligent, micro and macro, and she truly cares." [WWD, 2nd item]

In the biggest nightmare scenario ever, a pair of twins separated at birth married each other. The man and wife did not discover their shared DNA until after they were hitched. According to a Member of Parliament familiar with the case, the twins "met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation." Ugh. We feel so bad for these Flowers in the Attic, but still: Ew. [BBC News]

Kim Cattrall Reverses Position On Killing Animals

  • Despite toiling for so many years educating Americans on the merits of croc-skin bags on a certain premium cable TV show, Kim Cattrall says she has seen the PETA light: she's donating all the furs she wore in making the SATC movie to the animal rights organization so they can be donated to homeless people who no one will ever mistake for trendsetting style icons. There's just one flaw in that plan, and we think you might know what it is. [Page Six]
  • Spanx is getting into the business of making bras. Shudder. [FabSugar]
  • Gisele is the latest model to think she's a fashion designer. Ms. Bundchen's collection will be in stores in March 2008, but she didn't do it alone (surprise, surprise) — she's partnered with an obscure little duo known as Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. [Vogue UK]
  • Gucci will release a limited edition collection in honor of the Beijing Olympics. Wonder if anyone will follow up with a "Genocide Olympics" line? Yeah, probably not. [WWD, sub req'd]
