    Oy vey! And not for nothing but I was taught in Catholic school this exact same thing. My entire junior year of religion was devoted to the study of morality and IVF (if you aren't using your husbands jizz) or using a surrogate are considered by the Catholic church to be amoral...and my parents wonder why I ran as far away from the church as possible while simultaneously giving the pope the finger.

    Now, I am not saying this whole "children of single mothers have a worse life" line of defense is at all valid, but let's pretend for a second that it is; wouldn't this be significantly different for children who's mothers PLANNED to have them alone, weighed the costs, are happy about the decision, ect, than for children of mothers who found themselves divorced or widowed, things that aren't planned for?

    @colormeroutine: That makes sense to me. It's a lot different to know that you want a kid and that you're ready for one, than to, say get knocked up and have the father make a run for it.

    If God didn't intend for single women to be able to have babies, then He would have made fetuses to spontaneously abort themselves after a breakup.

    @morninggloria: He's talking about women who go in for IVF, who are unmarried and without a boyfriend. Puah is a charity to help those dealing with infertility.

    Who needs a religious authority's permission when life itself allows you to do it?

    All I'm saying is, if God didn't mean for it to happen, he should have made conception and labor dependent on marriage vows.

    As a Jew, I apologize for these people. But thank God, they are the quite small Orthodox faction, and not the much more common Reform or Conservative that I claim.

    While I do think a dialogue about responsible use of IVF is in order...condemning all single moms isn't it.

    Wow, this post just made me realize that Mary is the first-well known single mom. Good for her. Even if Joseph hadn't come along, Jesus still would have been born and still been (according to Christians) the Son of God. As long as people who WANT kids are having (and/or adopting) them, good for you.

    Wow, this has been a really confusing day, religion wise, on Jez. First the Methodists are talking about robbers and swimming, and then the Jews are talking about telling single women to say "No thanks, I'm Jewish" to maternal urges.

    @fakezen: I would have been much more inspired by speaking rabbits. But you know, they do have that disapproving look quite often, so you can't be sure they wouldn't be judgy. But speaking rabbits would certainly be more fun.

    @fakezen: Unless rabbits use their positions of power to intentionally misinterpret their religious traditions to mask personal and inherent misogyny... but I don't think rabbits are that smart. They could probably be bribed with alfalfa or threatened by an overzealous simpleton named Lenny...
