    This stuff makes me so happy ads for prescription medicine are illegal here and there are really few ads around for medicine that's not homeopathic. Some Advil. Some muscle pain relieve stuff. A weird one for hemorrhoids once.

    And cold medicine is not allowed either. DON'T EVER CHANGE, LEGISLATION!

    @feministabroad: The argument people always throw back at me is that knowing about medicine is 'empowering'.

    I'm sorry, but I trust my doctor. When I don't trust my doctor, I find a new one. I don't NEED to self-diagnose or self-medicate, because I have affordable (if somewhat pricey) health care.

    Might these ads have anything to do with the lack of socialized health care in the US? Or are things in, say, the UK just as bad?

    To me, its hand and hand. Becuase OF COURSE I would be against socialized health care if I was making millions from overpriced medications and procedures. But...of course...im just a conspiracy theorist. Yup.


    You know, before I leave England I want to get hurt. lol. Isnt that weird? I just want to know what it would be like to stroll into a hostpital, get fixed and leave.


    And also, is it true that you have to be placed on a waiting list to get plastic surgery? I heard this some where.

    @feministabroad: In The Netherlands, plastic surgery, yes. Cosmetic surgery, no. Cosmetic surgeons have private practices, plastic surgeons only operate in hospitals. And since there are waiting lists for practically every procedure, this isn't any different. But if you have enough money you can bypass the plastic surgery waitlist by going cosmetic.

    There are a few private general clinics popping up here and there, that also do regular procedures, but they're not big yet.


    I don't trust the American pharmaceutical industry. AT. ALL.

    @haguenite: I'm Canadian, and we have socialized health care AND pharma-ads. They weren't around till... I dunno, the early 00s? But I can't imagine cable without them now.

    @heatherwritesstuff: Okay, okay -- so apparently, here, we can advertise either: the name of the drug OR what it does. So we can list what it treats without saying the name, or say the name and make very vague references to how it'll help you. But I'm not entirely sure this is still the law, as we get American drug ads -- stating name and uses -- all the time.

    Rx ads drive doctors insane too. My girlfriend's dad is a GP and people come in all the time with suggested medication for problems they haven't even been diagnosed with. He's had patient's get angry because he won't put them on the drug they saw on television, even if it's the WRONG MEDICATION.


    Such is the power of advertising.

    @steampoweredboy: god! i hate that. i feel that to a certain extent, the internet and webmd in particular have had a similar effect. i'm against anything that gives people the opportunity to self-diagnose. it's one thing to be informed, but there's a pattern i'm seeing with my friends' parents (not my friends; they're too poor to be this choosy) where they basically decide what medication they need, or what illness they have, and literally go from one doctor to another until they find one who agrees with them. it's insane. second opinions are great, even third opinions, but once you're on your fourth doctor and they've all been saying the same thing, maybe it's time to consider the fact that your non-doctor ass is wrong and it's time to hush up and listen.

    ...My favorite drug ad is Abilify, for (I believe) manic depression. The list of side effects goes on seemingly forever, and includes "involuntary movements" which "may become permanent." AAaAaAAaaIiIiEEEe.
