    Love. This. Woman.


    My mother would talk about her from time to time. However, I didn't develop my full-on crush until I saw her documentary. It made me cry. It made be feel jubilant. It made me proud.


    Sometimes I feel short-changed; because it does not seem that our leaders have the same dynamic qualities of fearlessness, fairness, and dedication as they once had.


    Whatever happened to our leaders?

    I got to meet this amazing woman in the early '90s, after hearing her speak at my college. She would have made a great President.

    Every time someone speaks about the historic nature of Obamas election they are always sing Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks... And it just infuriates me so much becuz if anyone was the forerunner for Obama it was Shirley Chishold. Its not that King and Parks arent important but they weren't out there running for President back when no other black or woman was.


    Shirley Chisholm inspires me to be better than I am on a daily basis. I randomly bring her name up in conversations or on blogs just becuz I feel such a special relationship to her (which might be odd) but its true.


    She was such an amazing woman and remains an inspiration to all people!a


    Thank you jezebel for spotlighting this amazing trailblazing woman! My day has truly been made!

    @HalfBloodPrince: You can really hear the echo of Shirley's words about not running as an African-American or a woman but as an American in Barack's famed speech about running for all Americans. (It would be cool if someone edited a video with those speeches together.)

    Shirley Chisholm was a true groundbreaker - but gets little credit for it. So little is taught in public schools about women. The only suffragist mentioned in most high school history books is Susan B. Anthony. Little or no mention of of Elizabeth Cady Stanton - and never a mention of Alice Paul. Same with feminism. We need to do a better job of educating our young women and men.

    "Unbought and Unbossed" is an incredible documentary. I love that "Unbought and Unbossed" showed women in all levels of the campaign--from stuffing envelopes to developing strategy--and the optimism she inspired across the country.


    But isn't it a bit disingenuous to feature a quote from Gloria Steinem above, when a significant portion of the documentary discusses NOW's lack of support for the Chisholm campaign and Steinem's endorsement of McGovern over Chisholm, even during the primaries?


    I'm not trying to be a hater: just asking.

    After writing it I found out that my grandma was a huge Shirley supporter and had signs all over her yard of Shirley for president....she even had these Shirely Chisholm sponges that expanded when they got wet.
