This quote from the NY Times piece about the New Deal: "[FDR's] relief administrator, Harry Hopkins, had a ready answer: 'People don't eat in the long run. They eat every day.' " reminded me of something that I heard during the election that made a lot of sense to me:

Many Republican leaders are, essentially, misanthropes. I don't say all, and I certainly don't say all Republicans. But for many, there really is a sense that individual lives matter less than some idea -- financial, ideological, religious, what-have-you. Hence, the New Deal was bad. Because it privileged poor people over financial institutions.

@ellaesther: I get the sense that they feel individuals should be able to take care of themselves, because they the Republicans take care of themselves quite well. Of course, they conveniently forget that they are the party of privilege and start out with distinct advantages over others.

I am going to get, like, 20 of those muscle pads you can get for $1 at CVS, the ones that heat up to relax sore muscles? And I am going to stick them ALL OVER MYSELF, under my sweaters and pants. And toe warmers, too. And that is exactly how stoprobbers will be toasty warm in the standing section of the swearing-in ceremony.

"Are the taxpayers going to be on the hook for her accomodations in the White House? Obama is wonderfully charismatic as a politician, but so far I am feeling lukewarm about all this "unity" talk, which is starting to look like it will mean that very little actual change happens because the Administration is too busy throwing throwing everyone and their uncle a bone so they can "unite the country." But instead everybody feels dissatisfied, and things are roughly the same.

He hasn't said he'll actually take what they say seriously, but that's another matter.

The invocation may be symbolic but it does give me the impression that he is trying to please them.

@PilgrimSoul: Beats the Republicans and their "our way or the highway" philosophy. Look, he wants people to realize that their concerns will be noted. But in the end, he will make the decisions with the best interests of everyone in mind. I liken him to Captain Picard -- listen to everyone then do what you think is best. It could lead to stagnation, but I think it might actually lead to people voicing useful opinions for a change.

Moreover, national leadership is not an opportunity to congratulate oneself on how "open-minded" one is as opposed to others and lecture other people on tolerance of opposing viewpoints, which is basically all I'm hearing thus far.

I'm also a bit tired of this "but Republicans have divided us! Obama will unite us!" Obama's "let's please everyone whilst I drink the Kool-Aid on how wonderful I am" is not national unity worth having, IMHO, because it's unity that preserves the status quo, that tells everyone their opinions are valuable no matter how virulent the terms. That's not leadership talking from Obama's podium right now; it's self-flattery. Leadership would be talking about the things that you have to do to get the country moving. Leadership would be not postponing desperately needed economic plans for no other reason than the vanity of feeling like one has "united" with Republicans in service of that goal... all while sacrificing the goal itself.
