Study: Overweight Women More Likely To Be Criminals |

On the other hand, even very thin women can have low self-esteem. So I would say that maybe these things are related to low self-esteem and not obesity itself.
On a side note, how does obesity affect whether or not you lose a close friend? I lost a good friend in college, but I don't think me being fat caused him to drive too fast on the icy road at the end of January and flip his truck into a creek.

So, given that most of the population counts as "overweight" now (if they lower it any more, Kate Moss will qualify), of course you're goint to intersect with other groups. Add in discrimination from assholes, it makes sense. The answer is to stop the discrimination and toss the BMI back into the pseudoscience category with phrenology.

But lastly, I just wanted to address the love life part: The overweight women were also least likely to break up with a longterm partner or get a divorce. This is not an attack on Jessica; but I just felt it had a negative connotation because it came right after the "Discrimination leads to low self-esteem which means the victims do not stand up for themselves..." part.
For a nation wringing it's hands over the divorce rate, maybe the answer is to get fat and happy? Oh sweet, delicious vindication! I notoriously don't take any shit from men, lovers or otherwise. Because I like and value myself. It is a fallacy that fat women stay with men because they can't do better. Men love fat women, even if the public perception is different. But sometimes fat women stay with bad men because we are women and women sometimes do that.

It would be just as silly as this.

It's perfect because that's the fantasy I always have in my mind when people give me shit that they wouldn't give anyone else because they think they can get away with it.
Fat women are discriminated against? And it affects the outcomes of our lives? You don't say...

Health and Weight do not always match.
There is a difference in being 'ok' with a problem you have that you can change and being happy about it.
If you're overweight, 25+bmi (and you don't have a low % body fat) then your fat ass needs to lose some weight.
It's like saying "I'm stupid and I'm ok with that". Say that loud and proud. You have an obvious fault that you can correct through some hard work, but your lazy ass just doesn't care.
Don't give me all these bullshit excuses that apply to probably less than 5% of the population(and i'm being very generous). 100 years ago, 3/4th of the US population was not overweight. Our genetics have not changed that rapidly. It's our lazy habits that contribute to our problem.
I don't think I have EVER met ONE person who has lost a significant amount of weight(in a healthy way) and said that it wasn't one of the best decisions of their ENTIRE LIVES.
You say it's not my problem?
Q: What is the cost of overweight and obesity?
A: Total Cost: $117 billion
Direct Cost: $61 billion*
Indirect Cost: $56 billion
Thats a low figure compared to others I have found ranging up to 300+billion, and it's only getting worse

Race-based income discrepancy also provides an explanation for the "more likely to face the death of a friend or relative" finding--poor people lack access to health care, ergo they die younger, and people tend to socialize with others in their income bracket.
I'm no statistician, but I just don't think you can use the numbers in the study to draw the conclusions that these UK papers did. (Where's the US media reaction?)

@tscheese: i am stealing "walking ebola-sars pox". brilliant, as usual.
@LadySilver: Health and Weight do not always match. um, yeah - big bag of 'duh' there. of course they don't always match.
@PittsburghJen: right on.
i'm not even going to touch on the idea of income -> food choices -> obesity, but i think it parallels your statement.

You know a lot of the fat women I know are happily married. I think that there might be some sort of correlation but:
A. Is it worth studying, I mean that sort of study innately implies that someone is better off for being married and I don't think that's the case.
B. Would anyone believe it if they did find some sort of correlation between being happily married and being fat or would the newspaper spin it like "Being happily married is making you FAT and it's killing you."
UGgggg.

My mom didn't take her shit and stood up to her, but she had to choose to either fight for her job or go on disability (she picked disability because she wouldn't get paid at all if she were to fight for her job). Cindy is the wife of the Asst. Superintendant, so she was able to get away with her crap.
Ugh, some people really piss me off.

Please take your intolerant comments elsewhere. There's plenty of dark, sad little corners of the internet where "Hating on teh Fatties" is a fun sport, but this isn't one of then.
