Miyuki Hatoyama, you don't need to go to Venus to meet aliens. Anyone who grew up in the 80's knows that they hang out in the bar of the Paramus Holiday Inn.

The FGM story actually makes me kind of happy. I'm so glad that some of these women might be able to restore sexual sensations and experience a well-rounded sex life.

"French doctor Pierre Foldes has developed a simple reconstructive procedure for victims of female genital mutilation that removes the painful tissue and reconstructs the clitoris by cutting ligaments to expose the root. "The results are getting better and better," he said . "Seventy two to 75 percent [of patients] are back to normal sexuality after 18 months." He has operated on more than 3,000 women in his hospital in France and is developing a program that would follow up with the women for months, giving them psychological treatment as well."

This is the best news I've read in awhile. Wonderful wonderful wonderful.

If these system backups are handled imagine how many other SICK CRIMINALS will be off the streets and prosecuted - how many cases will be solved - how many people will have a start to regaining peace of mind.

When I was reading the story yesterday about the rape kit backlog I couldn't help but think that processing that evidence could help solve other crimes like murders and theft, I'm both saddened and glad to be proven right. I hope that families of the women killed can find some comfort.

@hfree: I had made that same observation yesterday, thinking well if rape baclogs are not important enough for the authorities, maybe a connection to murders would get things moving.

I am also saddened to see I was right in my assumptions.

Just one rethorical question though: if DNA started being used for criminal investigations in the years 1987-89 and over, how could the LAPD have solved DNA samples related to sexual assaults from the 50s,60s and 70s since the technology for analysis and comparison was not quite there yet? I'm just curious as to how and what type of evidence was collected and storaged then, compared to how it is now.

Any forensics buff on the boards who could enlighten me?

Chief Beck said. "Back then, a rapist might only get two years."

Well, he only got 5 years in 1978, so if he were to get 2 years in the 50's, does that mean we're up to at least 10 years by now? For fucks sake, you can go to jail for longer for selling marijuana than for committing rape!

Did anyone else see Southland last night, by the way? The L.A. rape kit backlog nightmare was a central plot point, and well-handled at that. I'm grateful to them for raising the profile.

@ritualtheory is ready for her star now, Mr. DeMille: As a former Angeleno, and someone who knew a number of cops/deputies when I was there, I really like the show - it's got an underlying ring of authenticity to it, yet it manages to entertain.

@Jack_Burton: That's good. I'd been wondering about the authenticity, since it's obviously one of the qualities for which they're striving.

@ritualtheory is ready for her star now, Mr. DeMille: Inauthentic... who does to Twin Palms Pasadena for a brunch date if they need to be on call in Downtown LA? As soon as I recognized the restaurant (it's one of my favorites) I began calculating the traffic.

@staryberry: It's pretty rare for film or TV to get that part right... It's too expensive to shoot every location as it is in reality...

I lived in Silverlake, and I stopped counting how many times I saw the Astro Diner in films & TV, shot as somewhere else (somewhere outside of Cali, even).

Ever wonder why most of Fast and Furious(I) takes place within a couple square miles surrounding Alvarado (essentially driving in circles, then towards the River @ the end)? Because the 213 is the cheapest to shoot - they can close off streets cheap.

You'll notice that they shoot Venice for Malibu all the time, if you keep an eye out... Same thing...
