stories like this (and watching too many episodes of Forensic Files) has convinced me to never marry or never take out a life insurance policy until i have kids. What a creepy son of a bitch.

@rahelio: I have heard more than once on these shows that sometimes a spouse takes out life insurance on the other without mentioning it! That sort of thing really shocks me. I hope I have merely misheard. I think both parties should have to visit a notary with passports in order to do that.

The article says it was manslaughter because he was trained in SCUBA rescue and he let her drown. This is extra crazy because even an inexperienced diver (who has been certified) knows at least 3 or 4 things to do to help a diver in distress.

Oh god, I went to the MSNBC article on this, and the picture that goes with the article shows the victim lying lifelessly on the seafloor in her scuba gear. It even SAYS "lifelessly" in the caption. It's actually way more creepy & gruesome than I'd think, and makes me really sad. Way to go MSNBC.

@hippichx sez PEACE PLEASE: I read the book, and then saw a special on one of the crime type shows about it. It seems like in that case, it really was an accident. But who knows? Oh, and I think they based that movie Open Water on the case, though I haven't seen it.

I must say, that story gave me nightmares for awhile.

@hippichx sez PEACE PLEASE: I LOVE that book. (In A Sunburned Country in the US, but I first read it in NI and think it had another title there). I still laugh out loud reading certain passages, and am torn between wanting to go there, badly, and being scared shitless.

@hippichx sez PEACE PLEASE: YES!!! Bill Bryson is one of my FAVORITE authors! Another one of his stories that is pertinent to this is the one about the Prime Minister who disappeared while swimming and no one outside of Australia ever heard about the story at all.
