I love how the manual on The Smoking Gun reads in HUGE FONT "Hooters! A Fun Place to Work" - which should be amended to read "Hooters! A Fun Place to Work if you don't gain weight, cut your hair, show bruises (we really don't care how you got em, just dont show em", don't wear ponytails, and have no tattoos that we can see!"

This make me sick. There should have been some sort of compensation for this woman. Its not her fault she was in a relationship with an asshat, but the fact that she was in some way punished for that makes me go *stabby stabby doom doom*.

Like this poor woman doesn't have enough going wrong in her life right now. It's awful that her quote is basically affirming that she thinks that Hooters was right in wrongfully terminating her. I hope she gets some help and a far less sucky job.

Huh. I knew there was a reason I thought Hooters was gross. Other than the fact that it's supposed to be a "family" restaurant but the waitresses wear booty shorts and as little covering up top as possible. Can someone splain this concept to me? Cause booty shorts and tank tops don't exactly scream "Bring your kids here!" to me. I thought Chuck E. Cheese was a family restaurant. Welp, learn somethin' new every day! Ugh. I hope that girl settles for a bajillion dollars therefore ensuring she'll never have to set foot in such a shitty environment ever again.

@terribletwenties aka Aesop's Foibles: The "family friendly" aspect is the worst part of Hooters to me. Bring 'em in when they're young, get 'em indoctrinated, normalize the objectification, set up that unrealistic ideal of womanhood as young wholesome friendly stripper.

I'm not posting this to denigrate former or current employees of Hooter's. I do have a problem with the stringent and narrow requirements that define a Hooter's Girl, especially as a perfect distillation of the impossible expectations our society applies to women in general.

I think this is just the logical extent of a place like Hooters. You blatantly commodify women's bodies to sell food, so their bodies are crucial to the job. Like that woman on MTV's True Life on peer pressure a few months back who was working at Hooters and got a boob job to pull in more money. This is a problem with Hooters as a company, not just with the shitty manager.

@deitybox: it's also a problem with protections for workers needing time off for any number of reasons -- their own or a family member's health, an abusive relationship or otherwise being the victim of a crime, disability, etc.

What a crappy employer. When I lived in NYC, I was in a very verbally abusive relationship. He never laid a hand on me, but he had me trapped. He'd steal money from me so I could never get enough together to leave him; he'd always accuse me of cheating (I never once cheated on him, even though I had the opportunity); he lied about everything; he'd threaten to kill me, etc. My employer found out about it (my performance dipped, and I explained that I was stressed and not thinking clearly) and he offered me use of one of our company's apartment units (I worked for a real estate management firm) until I could save enough to put a deposit on another place and move.

In the process of switching bosses and in therapy.

The jealous: I haz it.

While this is shocking, it's not. Apply the same scenario to any company nowadays and you get the same result. Big companies don't care about workers anymore. You're lucky if you find one that does. I don't imagine most chain restaurants are in the habit of making sure their employees are safe and sound.

@NefariousNewt: I mean, while I agree that labor protections for workers in the US are insufficient, I do not think it is true that any big company would fire someone for having bruises because of an assault. Hooters is a special case in that respect.

There is a vast array of cosmetics which will hide tattoos, which I imagine will also hide bruising. Why didn't those unhelpful pricks just suggest that? I always thought the Hooters waitresses wore a lot of make-up anyway.

These Hooters people are jackasses. I hope this waitress gets a better job and a better relationship. Sheesh.

Hooters is a train-wreck. I was in meetings about writing their insurance a few years ago. The female CFO (sort of Laura Flynn Blyle looking) came to the meeting in a blouse opened about three buttons too many. The underwriters (all male) heard nary a word she said, as they were too busy trying to look down her shirt. As though that were any challenge.

But they had a HUGE claim that arose from their allowing employees to get drunk in the parking lot after work in FL. One of those drunk employees then drove home and killed someone. I think the driver was related to someone in local law enforcement, so it became a huge, huge claim.

Lovely cvompany, that Hooters... *headdesk*
