I'm a mid-west escapee with a dysFUNctional family. I grew up poor and so did my husband but he got a really good job so now we live on the west coast and have a completely surreal charmed life. We can't relate to anyone we used to know and many days we can't deal with people out here we're supposed to relate to. I feel like this a lot.
@dahliacactus: Yes, yes, and yes. I'm still in the midwest, but I'm now in a major city rather than the teeny tiny farm towns I grew up in. And I'm single. But still, yeah, I totally hear you.
@I'm Chuck Bass: I fell in love with A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. Was it challenging to read? Absolutely. Was it also sweet, funny, real, and tragic? Hell yeah.
@bluebears: As a die-hard fan, I admit my bias, and this comment is NOT meant to be condescending: Maybe only 5 pages is not a fair trial? Read "You Shall Know Our Velocity" and then write him off if you still feel that way.
He is a social justice activist, feminist, pulitzer-nominated author. "Unbearable" seems awfully unfair.
@bluebears: He is a much better person than a writer. The shorter his work, the better it is. Each one of his short stories is worlds better than his novels (which I have, indeed, read).
Aw, i didn't think Juno was twee. Sometimes I think people just want to hate on anything that smacks of hipster, indie-ness even if it turns out to be cute and moving.
Nobody ever talks about what an overly contrived piece of pretentious bullshit "Me, You and Everyone We Know" was and I think it's because Miranda July is a 'legitimate' performance artist unlike Diablo Cody who has suddenly become a lightning rod for hateration.
@roodles: I often have described "Me, You and Everyone We Know" as the worst movie I've ever seen. With indie weirdness just for the sake of indie weirdness.
I will see this movie based on the cast alone. If it weren't for this post, I wouldn't have even read any reviews about it. I'll see it, probably enjoy it, and refuse to feel bad about it.
@roodles: I do, constantly. I have an inexplicable loathing for Miranda July which nothing can sate. I try very hard to overcome it but then I read about her or in this case see her film and I hate her even more. It's not rational but there you go.
@roodles: Oh God, THANK YOU. I fucking HATED "Me and You and Everyone We Know." It made me feel violent. Never has a film (or, well, anything) made me want to kick puppies and spit on rainbows.
I read "Candy Girl" back in law school and thought Diablo Cody was funny, though I didn't agree with everything she did. When I found out she was writing a movie, starring some of my very favorite actors, I was super excited. And I wasn't disappointed.
@roodles: I refuse to get on the Diablo Cody hate as well. I think it sucks one of the only famous writer ladies who is a Jezebelle (she used to post here - maybe that had something to do with it?) gets shit on so heavily. It's so girl-hate-y and it really bothers me.
Disappointing, if only because it has people in it I like.
It is a movie I would LIKE to LIKE, but the reviews are already making me wary. I have kids and I don't get out that often. I am always scared to waste any movies I get to see on something that is going to be crap. Sooooo different than when I was young and could just go see whatever and it didn't seem like that big a waste if it wasn't good...
@applejuice: same. I want to like this movie, I love John Krasinski, and yet...even before I saw the reviews all I could think was Little Miss Sunshine.
I can't believe how intensely cynical everyone is being about this film. Are we really so postmodern that a heartfelt story is "twee"?
Dave Eggers was shortlisted for a Pulitzer, Sam Mendes is an oscar winner and the cast is amazing. I'm in. And I will cry and not feel un-hipster about it.
I will honestly say that the cast alone will get me to see this movie. It seems neurotic and happy and weird and I like that.
Question: how are the main characters hipsters? Does 'hipster' mean anything concrete anymore? Why is the term hipster hated so much when there's no clear definition of what one is or the qualifications to call someone one.
I must not be 'with it' enough...what does twee mean?
@andheartss haz it: Hipter seems to just mean anyone who dresses "that way" anymore. Want the character to be a hipster? Throw an eclectic outfit from some thrift stores together and voila!
Twee is a word I have heard a lot here in the UK (By my inlaws and elderly people) over the years I have lived here, so I don't know if it is more an older Brit word that is getting used more in the US now or not. It means overly sentimental, sappy or sweet.
You know what? After this week, I could USE a slightly self-satisfied movie about two people in love that go on a quirky journey together. I hope there are made up phrases and words that are "too cool" sounding, and I hope it has all the trappings of a sweet, twee, indie romp.
I hope it's trying too hard, I hope it's slightly predictable, and I hope it's comfortingly hopeful and marginally honest about relationships and wacky people.
After this week in the news I'd be happy to see a movie that had singing unicorns with rainbows that shot out of their butts ridden by fairies who blow bubbles that turn into chocolate sundaes.
@tiredfairy: You get a heart and a smile for this.
For me, a good movie is a good movie. For me, good movies include Juno, Anchorman, Baby Boom, Brick, I Love You, Man, and Spider-Man. Sometimes I want to think, sometimes I want to laugh, sometimes I just want to forget everything for two hours.
I'm pretty much down for anything with Maggie G. Except Mona Lisa smile but there my hatred for Kirsten Dunst and Julia Stiles overrode my Maggie love.
