Eeeerm.... Didn't Scarlett release her own album like a year or two ago? Tom Waits covers or something? This is kinda awkward 'cuz Ellen doesn't seem to know about that with all her "how did you know she could sing?" and "you've launched her career" talk. Or I am missing something.

@FrannyG: People ask Pete how he "knew" she could sing because their album was recorded before her solo album was, although her solo album came out first.

This doesn't surprise me at all as I believe it matches her talent for singing which also leaves much to be desired.

It's cool, I think Scarlett just needs some more practice. Perhaps this would help?

Interesting/Disturbing fact from pint-sized TransFat. I memorized "Shoop" along with "Whatta Man" when I was maaaaybe 10-11 (because I lived and breathed En Vogue and the Salt n Pep at the time) and had no idea how filthy those songs were until years later.

Also, anyone else notice the line towards the end of "Shoop" where the dude says he'd get Salt "Sound(in) like a retard" and then she makes a noise to, I guess, match the sentiment? Klassy!

I love this post and really miss the era of MC Lyte, Missy, Eve, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, etc. in hip hop. Have not seen anyone post this, but I remember this song by Eve so vividly. It is pretty heavy, and yes there is cursing so it may not be NSFW if you have it up too loud.

Well I've worked through Push It to I'll Take Your Man to odd and sundry 80's stuff... and now I'm currently mourning the fact that this:

That being said- if some hoochie ever taunted me with the words, 'Boom, I got your boyfriend, ha-ha I got your man...' I'd seriously have to cut her.

Jean Grae, Bahamadia...? These lady's are dope too. Damn, the pickings really are slim.

Little Kim is one of the illest, however, it's only her sex-based raps that get play. But the chick is dope. Her last album was majorly clever and totally slept on. Now, she's under hip-hop artist quarantine; her wack-ass label won't pub her or let her release music under a new label. Basically, they're stifling her until her career completely dies...bastards.

I feel that for women in the industry, there is only one way to be right now: rolling around on the floor, rump-shaking, ass-grinding and singing rap hooks. And because the music industry is so formulaic, there is no room for someone like Latifah or Lyte to come through.

Honestly, this makes me sad, because I feel that hip-hop saved my life and my self-esteem. Watching Lauryn Hill, a darker-skinned, beautiful and extremely intelligent artist breakthrough and make an impact did wonders for my self-image at the age of 16. I want young girls to have that again, an alternative to the hyper-sexual, semi-clothed, minimally talented chicks that are out today.

but the extent of my hip-hop goes to Common Market, Blue Scholars and Aesop Rock. Not your typical rappers. But that's kinda the point.
