<![CDATA[Natasha Richardson 1963-2009 Reportedly Brain Dead]]> Natasha Richardson, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave, sister of Joely Richardson, wife of Liam Neeson, has reportedly died* (update after the jump) following an injury suffered in a skiing accident in Montreal. [Time Out New York]

Update: Due to the original link not working, we got in touch with Time Out New York's publicist, who tells us that the magazine's editors are now amending their original story to report that Ms. Richardson is, according to sources, "brain dead and not expected to survive." In addition, the TONY publicist explains that their page is not loading due to heavy internet traffic.

Update 2: The NY Post is now also reporting the severity of Ms. Richardson's state.

<![CDATA[Inventive Teen Girls Discover New Form Of Self Mutilation]]> Those unfortunate souls who find cutting insufficiently harmful have taken mutilation to the next level with something doctors call "self-embedding disorder." According to the Chicago Tribune, embedding is when people deliberately insert objects into their flesh, either by forcing them through wounds or by puncturing the flesh with those objects.

Personnel at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, report extracting 52 foreign objects that 10 teenage girls deliberately embedded in their arms, hands, feet, ankles and necks over the last three years, including needles, staples, wood, stone, glass, pencil lead and a crayon. One patient had inserted 11 objects, including an unfolded metal paper clip more than 6 inches long.

Good Christ. Although the Trib reports that 13-24% of high school students deliberately injure themselves at least once, they do emphasize that embedding is an incredibly extreme version of this behavior and that "All the cases in the Ohio study involved girls living in foster homes, group homes or mental health facilities. Many had experienced or witnessed physical or sexual abuse, and most had been diagnosed with depression, anxiety or other mental health problems." Even so: we will not be able to look at a paper clip the same way again.

<![CDATA[ Sad news from Down Under: the confused baby...]]> Sad news from Down Under: the confused baby humpback whale who lost his mum and tried to suckle a yacht in Sydney Harbor, will be (or has already been) euthanized, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. According to National Parks spokesman John Dengate, "The animal is suffering from previous shark-inflicted injuries, is experiencing breathing difficulties and its flukes are hanging down…The last thing we want is that the whale should suffer." However, Bunna Lawrie, the "aboriginal whale whisperer, thinks they should let the whale live. "All we have to do is get it out to sea, nurse it out there and guard and wait for pod of whales. Let the whales figure out if they can accept it. A mother may think it can feed two." [Sydney Morning Herald]
