<![CDATA[Michelle Williams "Is Like Montana."]]> Michelle Williams gets the Vogue treatment:

Michelle Williams is one of those stars everyone liked even before she became the focus of morbid attention: she always seemed smart and down-to-Earth and effortlessly cool, and it's kind of disconcerting to see her the subject of one of Vogue's distinctively fawning portraits. She's now one of those Tragic Celebrities, like Liam Neeson, whose aura of sadness Cannot Be Ignored, and which necessitates a creepy air of kid-glove solicitude to cover our morbid curiosity. But then, of course, because it's a style piece, there needs to be equal weight given to that - and seriously, I don't envy the writer having to pull that together. The combo leads to weird, vague quotes from Ryan Gosling, like this:

"She's like Montana. If you want to get anywhere in Montana, you have to sit tight. You're on Montana time. It's very beautiful, but it's vast. If you want to get somewhere with Michelle, you really have to be patient. She's so vast. You really have to sit back and enjoy the view. There's so much going on internally, so much ground to cover."

Or, from a costumer friend of hers ("who became Williams's great friend when they bonded over the same navy peacoat by Boy") "So much of her style has to do with the fact that she's a soulful, practical, beautiful kind of person. Can she garden in it? Can she get a bagel in it? Because she's such a lovely, smart person, she looks adorable."

Because the actress is understandably chary of revealing too much and highly protective of he daughter's privacy, we get only a dim picture of the poets she likes (Galway Kinnell) and the music she listens to (Leonard Cohen) and, of course, her gamine style, which the author can discuss with less restraint (and which Gosling, apparently suffering from a case of the Francos, describes as "Clint Eastwood meets Brigitte Bardot.") From the miasma of puffy piece and opaque celeb-speak, I could deduce only that Williams is indeed sad, loves her daughter very much, and wants to protect her privacy. Quotes like this - "I wish we had rituals about grief, I wish it were still the Victorian times, and we could go from black to gray to mauve to pink, and have rings with hair in them" - make me want to know more. But when she's ready. And when she can go back to being a person again rather than a personification of our collective grief for someone we didn't know, and she did.

Obviously you can't play a romantic character if she's not really pretty. What's liberating about these characters is that there's this huge throbbing love between two people who don't look like our normal package of lovers. It made it more real and intimate because somehow those concerns were thrown away. If you've been married for a long time you love without looking. <![CDATA[Emma Thompson: Celebrities + Charities = "Causeweariness"]]> Today, Drew Barrymore penned a 760 word essay about the battle of global hunger. Somewhat unrelated, Emma Thompson has written a piece about how celebs with causes can be irritating.

"Part of the problem lies in semantics," writes Thompson.

Words such as "charity", "cause", "development", "human rights" and "activism" can all become skewed with misuse. At best, overuse renders them banal. But at worst they become counterproductive. Say "human rights activist" and increasing numbers of people will just slam their hands over their ears. There is causeweariness even before you prefix "human rights activist" with that extra soul-sapping tag "celebrity."

Thompson continues: "The question I dread most is: 'What's your favourite charity?' You might as well ask: 'What's your favourite war zone?' To talk about charity in this way compartmentalises it, separates it from the day-to-day stuff of life."

[Emma Thompson is a Greenpeace activist, a patron of the Refugee Council and wrote her Times of London essay as an aside to her work for the Helen Bamber Foundation, a human rights organization which supports survivors of gross human rights violations.]

But let's be honest: It's a double-edged sword, isn't it? Being a Celebrity with a Cause? If you're an actor, people are interested in you for your ability to portray a character and speak lines someone else has written. If you're a singer, people want to hear you sing. They don't necessarily want to hear about your dedication to cancer research or impoverished children. Entertainment, after all, is an escape.

And yet: With money and power and influence, celebrities have the ability to make an impact for a campaign or cause. Sometimes "awareness" is part of the battle. But what are the ultimate results? Does it work? Does the fact George Clooney and Ryan Gosing care about what's going on in Darfur — or Mia Farrow's hunger strike — affect your feelings about Darfur? spoken Does Khloe Kardashian stripping for PETA make you less likely to wear fur? And what about when Naomi Campbell posed nude for PETA, and then was seen in stuff like this?

I think she's a great, young girl, and I got into pageants, because I want to help young girls. I want to guide young girls. Besides, I don't think Madonna is a model mum. I have seen her in movies of her songs. She doesn't portray good morals. How can a woman of 50 dance almost naked on stage?
