@Dodgergirl: omg. when I read the transcript of that line of questioning I just about had an anuerysm. That was the definition of willfully obtuse. #ruthbaderginsburg
Ginsburg, you are never allowed to die. If that means you stay away from planes and sleep in a cryogenic freezer, so be it. Never, ever leave us. #ruthbaderginsburg
When I first saw this, I wanted to go "Noo noo noo." But apparently it's pretty minor, so I really hope she's OK. But pancreatic cancer is such a bad disease, and since we just lost Patrick Swayze, I worry for Ginsburg, worry that it can only be treated for so long.
@lalaland13: There are different types, and while the most common one is usually a death sentence, there are some that aren't as gnarly. Steve Jobs has one of the less-gnarly ones, and I hope Justice Ginsburg does too.
(As you can tell, I am not a medical professional.)
@NefariousNewt a.k.a. General Awesomesauce: I tend to disagree...I am eager to see who's next in line and I'd like to see her step down before the next election in 2012.
Also part of me (the protective granddaughter I suppose) wants to say, "You've done so much! Go revel in your awesomeness and take care of your health!"
@MizJenkins: While I see your point, I'm not so sure the Obama Administration has another confirmation fight in it right now. And you know that no matter who he picks, the Republicans will be on them like rabid dogs, as payback for health care reform.
@MizJenkins: Stevens will be the next to step down, unless RBG is sicker than we know. The justices don't like more than one vacancy a term, and Stevens WILL step down during a Democrat's administration. Stevens hired very lightly on his clerks for the year. I'd be shocked if he returns for the Oct '10 term.
@NefariousNewt a.k.a. General Awesomesauce: Stevens apparently hired less clerks this year so buzz on the SCOTUS blogs is that he may be contemplating retirement. Eeep.
@tankearae: Well if Justice Ginsberg get sicker, and Justice Stevens steps down... two openings? Not to mention how that would throw off the court itself...
@MizJenkins: I want her to stay as long as possible. I don't dislike Sotomayor but I don't love her. She is certainly not Ruth Bader Ginsberg and I don't think we need more moderates on the court.
@NefariousNewt a.k.a. General Awesomesauce: I'm very leery of her. I'm not at all convinced, based on her judicial history, that she'll be a firebrand. We NEED a firebrand to stare down Alito and Roberts and get the left wing of that court (and the moderates) riled up for social justice.
@tankearae: Make a deal with the devil and he'll reward you. How do you think Cheney has survived all these years? His heart is essentially dead, being kept alive by modern medicine.
@tankearae: I don't know. I have to say that I wouldn't feel bad if he croaked. I just know that day will come when I'm twice the age I am now, and he doesn't seem the type to retire first. He'll be like Rehnquist and die on the bench. Assholes seem to live forever.
@Alys Brangwin can't stop the beat: Sad but true. Friend of mine actually MET Scalia at a Federalist society event (ughhhh. when he told me he was going to meet scalia at a federalist society event i almost puked) and told me the dude drinks....well...a lot. Unless that was an isolated incident, I'm gonna imagine his liver isn't in great shape. But like Cheney, his assholeness will outweigh this possible health issue.
@tankearae: He's friends-ish with my parents' next-door neighbor (a super rich lawyer type), so I've met him a couple times now, once quite recently. He didn't over-imbibe during either of the dinners I attended, but he was obliquely assholish (perhaps he should have had a drink or seven), and this was among supporters / rich folk! I will say though, in regards to your question about his health, he seemed quite hearty and solid.
I'd like to add that my attendance at the dinners was not out of support for Scalia, but rather a combination of a love of free food and the desire to speak with a SCOTUS, regardless of how I feel about his positions.
My only problem with the entire statement is the idea that there will never be a woman without means who cannot get an abortion anymore. What do you mean "anymore?" There has never been much that people with means cannot get.
So perhaps what we need to work on first is destroying the systems of inequality that prevent people in poverty from having the same reproductive and other rights as those more well off...

And seriously, we need to start appointing young ones like the Republicans always do. Someone must outlive Roberts.

Now, can Scalia please drop dead? ;) (kidding...kinda.)

On that note, I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
Why is Scalia in such good health?
