I was fortunate that I had horses at my grandparents when I was younger. I adored them and they were my pride and joy. Horses were a luxury on my grandparents farm and I knew this and as such they were my responsibility to care for. I think I learned more during the time that I had them than many of the other pets that I have ever owned.

As far as Christmas went my mother absolutely adored Christmas and she tried to make it a magical time for my sister and I. The tree always looked like we had so many gifts under it that it was going to explode but what people didn't realize was that many of them were things she had either made, found at yard sales, dollar stores, little hair bows, socks and things like that and each one was individually wrapped. There was always one semi to expensive gift for each of us and then one family gift. My parents would find these gifts all year as they couldn't afford to buy them all at one time.

I am not sure if anyone here can even remember the Sears or Montgomery Ward annual Christmas catalogs that always came out but my sister and I would sit for hours pouring over those pages and carefully marking what it was that we wanted so very badly. We knew without a doubt that we wouldn't get most of what we marked but there was always the hope that there would be something in those pages that Santa would bring us and invariably at least one thing that we had marked would appear under the tree on Christmas. Those are the memories I treasure. It wasn't that my mom and dad spent an arm or a leg to make Christmas special but that it was silly little things like a hair bow wrapped in the Sunday cartoon my mom knew I loved.

I had a horse. He lived wild with the cattle, except when I could catch him and ride him. I so don't come from the East Coast.

Meet Me In St. Louis is my favorite Christmas movie, even though it's not centered only around Christmas. It's just so like, family love, and old fashioned, and happy. With dances and beaus for the girls! And a gruff old dad with a mustache! I love it.

I liked horses as a kid (wanted one, read Misty of Chincoteague), until I actually rode one when my family went to the Catskills, and I couldn't stand the manure smell and flies around the eyes.

Elf is a new Christmas classic, I adored watching it a couple of nights ago. Lots of good little jokes, like Faizon Love making an "ooookkkaaaaay" face at Buddy's proclamations of being an elf, the choice of Artie Lange as a mall Santa, world's best cup of coffee, the the narwhale, the snowman "who hasn't been anywhere," etc.

I also think Bad Santa is a great Christmas movie. Besides the profanity, it's very sweet and funny, especially with the scenes with Billy Bob and the kid.

And if you want a stretch, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are both set during Christmastime.

@LipstickLibrarian: I never had it. I like to ride as much as anyone, but having a horse was completely unrealistic in our family, and I never asked. I was lucky I had a bike.

I do remember begging very, very hard for a swing set, and it must have really bothered my parents that they couldn't afford one for us.

Good for Reese. I think that kids should learn that it's not about the amount that someone spends, it's the thought that gets put into the gift. Getting a sweater you hate that cost $150 is not as good as getting one that you love that cost $20.

I've said it before, but if you make your child look after the horse (feed it before you have your own breakfast, whatever the weather, muck out its stall, muck out its paddock, half an hour of good solid grooming a day, sit up with it if it's ill, wrestle worming paste into it, remember the farrier and the vet's appointments, school it with care and dedication), your child will not grow up spoilt.

@bowleserised: Yep, I'm a horse trainer so I think every kid should get a pony, but they need to do all the work that comes with it and best bet is they will grow up to be a compassionate, responsible person that put the needs of others first.

@BiBiVirtue: Yeah, those two words have become increasingly confused in everyday speech/writing. Technically gluttony refers to excessive eating, while glut is an excess of something, period. But if everyone was attentive to that kind of thing, then grammar/diction nazis like you and me wouldn't know what to do with our time. ;)

An alternative would be this doll tree fort from the Magic Cabin catalog. (I don't have kids, but I buy a lot of presents for friends' tots, so I get all these cool catalogs in the mail...love it!)

@Ruffians: My sis and I used to watch Christmas Vacation together late in the night on Xmas Eve as we were finishing stuffing stockings and assembling various "no assembly required" toys for the kids. We used it as a cautionary tale to keep our shit grounded next day when the dyfunctional family descended. It mostly worked, though the rum and eggnogs we also consumed helped.
