you guys, settle down. that's what newborn babies look like (maybe not SO grotesque). just because it's wrinkled and wet because it just came out of a body doesn't mean it's malicious. it's just a baby, and mom-meets-baby is often a really weird and scary introduction (understandable, right??), but that doesn't mean the entire situation is inherently evil. motherhood and childbirth are complicated.

i love this piece a lot - also, the viewer should totally be a permanent part of the sculpture. his reaction is priceless.

@fluxuspoo: I think the piece is amazing as well, but I don't know what comment led you to believe that the general consensus is that motherhood is inherently evil.

I think the point of the sculpture is to get people to think about our reactions to newborns, to parenting, etc. It doesn't mean that having a reaction that is less than OMG BABY YAY YAY NEWBORNS CUTENESS is somehow wrong. Why can't there be room for both sides? Some people just don't find newborns all that amazing, others do. Of course the relationships between motherhood/childbirth/being a parent are complicated. I don't think anyone is denying that.

Ron Mueck's stuff is amazing. I caught it in Sydney in 2002, and like many works of art, his pieces are far more evocative in-person, especially since Mueck uses scale and pose to deliberate effect on the viewer.

If you get a chance, definitely worth seeing!

@salymander: I haven't seen a single comment criticizing the woman's body, except that the image might be NSFW. And no hate either. Sorry, I'm not a baby person and I don't find newborns particularly amazing.

Quick question since a lot of people have a NSFW issue. I work from home so doesn't matter, but isn't just being on websites like Jezebel while you're at work NSFJ (not safe for jobs)? Does it really matter what pops up if you're surfing the net on company time? Seriously, just a question. I've never worked in an office 'cause I'm a creative type.

@Benevolent_Dictatrix I must I must increase my bust!: Same here; we can browse but nooo NSFW stuff. My job kind of ebbs and flows in terms of workload. Sometimes I honestly have nothing better to do but I'm required to be in the office. Other times I'm up to my eyeballs in work and working 7 days a week.

Fortunately I'm by myself in the office today but if that had come up and boss was around the corner there DEFINITELY would have been questions.

@moosesanddeers: In my office it does matter. We are not reprimanded for blog-reading (particularly because part of my job is to stay on top of news headlines). But NSFW images run the risk of attracting the wrong kind of attention. As an example: a male coworker looked at golf web sites all the time, and nobody got mad. But when they found naked chick sits in his history, things did not go well.
